I have a g4 466 which I use for video editing, generally through firewire, so I have lots of ide drive space. I want to home record -- hobbyist type recording, mainly acoustic and electric guitar and vocals. Could add further instrumentation through software. I have a nice large diaphragm mic, a small mixing board, but I need a sound card, etc. what do I want? Is soundblaster enough for a simple hobbyist's needs? or do I want something more elaborate? Yamaha UW500? more?

Soundblaster won't work in the mac. If you have the little 1/8" mic jack on the back, you could use that for right now as well as you would be able to use Soundblaster. I don't think the newer G4's have the mic jack though. Your probably lookin at $300.00 atleast, for a compatible soundcard. It also depends on what software your using. Not sure about the Yamaha. There is the digidesign audiomedia III, or the korg 1212, or event layla to name a few.

Goodluck,
