Once again i reach for your help. :)

I got really worried yesterday when i tested one of my ADAM S2-A's in the soffit mount box comparing it to the other speaker still freestanding. There was a slight basslift (that was expected)but something else i noticed was a less open top-end compared to the freestanding speaker, to me the speaker sounded less detailed and a somewhat boxy. The box is a tight fit, and the speaker is decoupled from the box with rubber pads. I did not have the front (baffle) on when listening, just the speaker in the box on a table beside the freestanding speaker. Do you think that not having the baffle on when listening is the problem here? or could i have some problems with box resonanses?, I really dont how the speaker should sound soffit mounted as i never done this before. :)
Also what material would be the best for the baffle?

The soffit mount frame is almost identical to Johns construction

heres a pic, note that this is just the frame, the box im talking about is a separate box for the speaker that will be placed in the soffit frame box. (just to keep my options open if i decide to get bigger speakers sometime)

Thanks alot

:) I love the chair in the room .......... ready for action!!

I would not worry about what you are hearing, just putting a monitor in a box might give you some weird results. Looking at the picture and the design guidelines you are following, you're on the right path.
Have patience, try it when you are finished :)

Just out of interest, what material did you constuct the box from?

thanks sjoko for giving me piece of mind :)
The box is 16mm MDF.

Michael: yeah the ADAMs are grreeeeat!I've never heard of anyone soffitmounted the S2-A's so its gonna be intreressting seing how they will perform.

cheers

ahh...sweet lord :)
i completed the soffit constrcution today and mounted the speakers. What a difference. With the baffle on everything sounded great!!!!!!!!!

Stop sitting on your ass listening! Go and finish that place!!:D

how was the low end mike?? are the adams ok for soffit mounting??

cheers

John!
From what i've experienced so far the ADAM's perform well soffit mounted, The low end did not increase drastically in volume compared to free standing, lowering the +-3db at 150hz shelving filter by 1db seemed enough to my ears. Overall the speakers now feel even more focused and detalied in the low-end than freestanding. So i'm happy. Looking forward to try mixing on them.

Something i've noticed now with good monitors is how you can really hear the flaws of the Mp3 format. If the music isnt sampled really really high i find it hard to listen to it, otherwise the music sounds just harsh and lacks depth.

yeah - the -1db shelf makes sense. Yes the increased clarity will detail all sorts of things from now on :):)

cheers

I had a listen to the new range of Adams monitors at the AES.
Pretty impressive, as far as you can tell there.
The most impressive in "monitor land" were Chris Polonis' new mains monitors - they kicked major butt!

Mike,

Sorry I missed your post. Looks like you have it worked out.

sjoko,

Do you know of a link to these Chris Polonis monitors? I don't see his name specifically in the list of exhibitors.

Thanks,

barefoot

Hi Bob,

Have you got a chance to do some mixes on the ADAMS....if so Are your mixes sounding the same outside the control room??? I am in de process of deciding which monitors I am going to use for my control room.

Regards,

Luis.

Luis!

yes i've done several mixes with the ADAM's, and they translate very well to other systems. Thery're really great monitors and i recommend the highly.
