this would be a good start with a few Shure sm57's,one for each guitar amp and each vocal.....bass can go direct....one sm57 and 2 Marshall MXL603's...57's and 603's go for about $79 each.....

of course you could go with a used unit.....

or if you wanna go the PC route, you could get a Delta 1010 soundcard for $500 and a Mackie mixer for $379......

but then again, with a clear budget Id know where to steer you....

Yeah, thats a good recorder too....

Musicains Friend has it at the same price......

shure sm57's 79.99

this package has 2 Marshall mxl1000's which if you take the ball off sound identical to the 603's I mentioned and come with a Fox dynamic mic......

so with your mic budget you could get the Marshall package and 2 sm57s

If you only need one vocal mic you could mic the drums with a sm57 on the kick, the Fox on the snare, and the 1000's as stereo overheads.....if u need a backup vocal mic, take the Fox off the snare and use it.....

u could actually mix it on that unit...but if you want to transfer it to PC, just a good soundcard.....since it has S/PDIF outputs, a card with S/PDIF would be optimal because that would be a pure digital transfer....Mars has a Delta Dio 2448 for about $89 that would do......

Well, you wouldn't typically. If you want to mix on the computer, you might as well record directly to the computer. If you like using computers or not is a matter of taste, mostly. Although I'm a computer programmer, I don't like using computers for recording, so I use hardware. You might like it. In that case, buy the SM57s, maybe one SM58 for vocals, and a small Mackie Mixer to use as a preamp, buy N-track, and you are set to start.
