Ok, here’s my 2nd installment of I.L.T.S. - fleshed out with some melodic themes.
http://www.nowhereradio.com/barefoot/singles

You may recall that most everyone agreed I had a real solid rhythmic backbone, but I was struggling with melodic content. https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=55474&highlight=barefoot

So, this is what I came up with. I think I also managed to brighten up the high end. Too much?

Let me know what you think.

Barefoot,

Minus the "this isn't my bag" stuff, I think you've a solid flow of vision, morph and journey on this tune.

I really think you could introduce new elements and phazes better by using a wider pan. You've a decent stereo spread on some elements but everything hit my ears down the middle. My little thoughts would be to introduce some things subtley on the hard left and others on the hard right. Around 2:3o ish, i think a pan sweep with one pulse on the right and the next on the left. or something of the sort.

By the 4:00 mark, it was all up the middle and almost too hot of a mix.

There is room for much more subtlety in this mix IMHO.

I appologizw for the lack of specifics and I admit I've lame ears in the genre but, these are the things that stuck out for me while listening to a very cool and evolving tune.

Peace,

Theron.

Much better! The high end stuff you've added makes a huge difference to my ears. It really helps to balance it out. Makes me want to grab my sax and play along.

I think theron had a cool idea with the panning.you could have parts alternate from side to side....sort of a call and response sort of thing. I like this version a lot better than the first and I think it has room to grow yet.

I agree with most of the previous comments..I liked it a lot better than the first version..

serious sound...

I could get busy to this tune...

Good tune. I thought this was a very advanced piece of music in the sense that there is a ton of stuff going on, and it had numerous changeups. The mix was quite good - although it causes WinAmp to skip sometimes. I don't know if anyone else had the problem.

Thanks for the great suggestions! I used your exact idea of stereo alternating pulses for the pad at 2:30 – plus a touch of chorus. I also did a bunch of panning and I think it sounds much better. Do you think anything should more extreme L/R?

You were right as well about the mix being “too hot” at times. To my ears this was coming from the snare, so I toned it down a little.

Listening again on a system with subs I noticed a bit of rumble whenever the big “gong” sound would coincide with the bass throb – like around 0:50 and 5:20. So I cut the gong bass a little in those places. I did the same with the deep pad that comes in at 1:42 – cut the lows just during the bass throbs. It opens things up and makes the bass more solid.

TripleM “I thought this was a very advanced piece of music in the sense that there is a ton of stuff going on”
That’s a cool compliment. Yeah this tune consists of about 100 individual tracks. I’m glad my work shows through.
