I really enjoyed Jeff's "Recording for Dummies" book, written at the perfect level for folks getting started. I still use that book sometimes, especially its handy settings for compression, EQ, etc. He clearly knows his stuff.

yeah i bought his book (Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies) a while back... it helped me out a LOT... pretty much everything i know about home recording was based from reading his book... from there i just read other books to expand my knowledge even further... i think ill post some links in the newbie section where people can buy his book... for around $15 it can save you a lot of time and frustration...

His list is good but it looks a little dated:

"Another Note: FMR Audio, makers of the RNC compressor, are coming out with the RNMP (really nice mic preamp). If all I've heard is true, this preamp will be at the top of my bang for the buck finds. Rumor is that it will be clean and open without being sterile and will cost about $400 for two channels. It's still vapor-ware at this point but I understand that it's in beta-testing right now and should be available in the next couple of months (of course they've been saying that for over a year now)"

On mics, I would add the AT 40 series.
