Does anyone use Band-in-a-box or anything similar?
Are they worth checking out for rough sketch type try-out stuff?

Cheers.

It's very good for most types of music, less so for a few.

I'm trying ChordPulse and Harmony Navigator on demo now, both interesting programs.
:)

Can you use more complex chords with band in a box, like 9 chords or 11 and 13 chords?

I'm trying 2 on demo now and don't want to overtax my imagination too much by adding another program.

Thanks

Absolutely, you can enter just about any legitimate chord and it will play back. I think it's a great tool for working up quick accompaniments and experimenting with composition. On the down side, it can sound somewhat artificial unless you have a lot of skill with midi based music.

Thank you ErichS,
I'm still using the demo of Harmony Navigator and finding it useful,I'll demo the BIAB software when this demo expires.
:)

I use BIAB all the time and have used it for many years. Whenever I write a song, I'll start with BIAB just to have some type of band groove. I use BIAB to experiment with chords (and yes, you can programmed some very complex chords), tempo, arrangment, etc.

Once, I have the format of the song finalized, I copy the song into Sonar - I then start to replace each of the instruments with live performances (although I some times I may keep a BIAB piano part or bass line).

Several years ago, we recorded a song using BIAB and then added live guitars and vocals. We sent it to our publisher and he placed the song in a few movies and a prime time network TV show. We still get residual checks from BMI every year - so obviously the BIAB groove in that style for that song held up under very close professional scrutiny.
