Im working with my friends band (Canvas Solaris) demoing out some of their newer songs. They aren't really using these demos for anything other than working out the arrangements. I just wanted to see what everyone thought of the recording as well as the playing. These aren't finished yet, only rough mixes with some of the tracks.
Anyhow i thought i would share this stuff with everyone.

If you like their music, they have a release coming out on Tribunal Records in a month or two.

I tried it at home and it worked well.

That was probably the firwall at work "access denied".

Solid recording, plenty of musicianship. I can't really say much, I'm not a huge fan of noodler bands. I don't mean that in a bad way though.

Ok, I love prog metal and such. But that intro doesn't work (first one). I understand what's going on so don't bring that up. But it's just too extreme. That snare is not played at the right time.

And I know these are roughs, but try to get more thump on the bass drum. With those style guitars you have mucho room to get a nice full kick. But from what I heard I like it. Is this just instrumental or not?

I listened to both demos. There isn't much of a "song" here, just sounds like you guys jamming to a few riffs. Again, kind of confused, not really sure how to evaluate these demos. Is there a term for this type of music? Probably the most "confusing" music I've heard in a long time. :)

the first one - there is hardly any bass at all.. good drum sound.. too bad there is no low end.. It's hard to comment on.. I guess the guitar sound might be good if there was some bass, but without it things sound almost irritating..

the second one - same comments.. nice drum sound though..

ok let me explain lol

First off, (homeuser) im not in this band nor did i write any of this stuff, im just helping out with the demo.
(wfaraoni) thanks for listening, i know the stuff is really weird.
(Linchpin) I know where your coming from, this definantly is not my favorite style of music but i enjoy watching these guys when they play this madness every now and then.
(Hardcore) thanks for the comments, im not sure where your coming from with the snare is in the wrong place thing. I guess everyone hears things very differently.
(B. Sabbath) they are planning on adding bass sometime this week. I know its very thin in the guitar region at the moment. Those would not be the guitar sounds i would choose but thats how they like it. I think i got their amp sound to tape pretty accurately. Ill try and beef everything up once i have the bass to work with.
Once again, thanks for listening guys.

I listened to the first one. I hear a lot of potential here, but it's kind of awkard to me. And I do like this kind of stuff.

I hear the snare being off in the begining section. I think it's like a sixteenth note late - maybe on purpose, but awkward.

I agree that the guitars should sound beefier, but if that's what they like...

And I echo B.Sabbath's comment about more bottom. I'd like to hear it when they add bass. And it could use more kick, maybe less snare.

Good start, and interesting stuff.

thanks for the comments

fprod south- thanks for the comments, i keep getting the comment about lacking low end. I think i need to see if there is something up with my monitoring setup.

Nilbog- the drummer is really good and he does know it but..... ive also seen him play in other bands where he had plenty of control and none of the whacky/flashy sounding stuff. They are really nice guys and just have nothing better to do (this town is a hole in the wall) than play crazy video game music.

jake

thanks for listening. Id like to hear more comments or suggestions about my recording (not just from jake). I can use all the help i can get.
"Too choppy and complicated" many people take this approach but this style is what they enjoy playing. I really admire them for sticking to their guns. They know that their style of music will only appeal to a select audience and that its not gonna make them millions of dollars. They obviously have the skills to play just about anything that the metal bands of today are putting out but they aren't going to change just to make a buck or two.

There's a big difference between chopy and tight and complex. I like music from many different genres but this seemed overdone and not extremely well executed.

jake its cool

i respect your opinion. I agree that there are places where its not as tight as it could be if you read my first post you will see that I already stated these demos were recorded to work out the arrangements. They are not supposed to be finished versions by any means.
Thanks for you thoughts though and taking the time to listen.
