This is a crusty hardcore band I just recorded for a split 7" they are doing. They are a bit sloppy and didn't want a very pristine sound (if you listen to crust or powerviolence I'm sure you'll know what I mean).

Anyways
there is one of their tunes for your critique.

forgot to add any of the gear used on it (for anyone who cares)...

Drums: B1's as overheads, audix i5 on snare and tom. Shure 55SW on kick.
Bass was DI'd through a sansamp and then run through a ratt distortion pedal on mixdown.
Guitar was 57 and audix i5.
All run through a soundtracs topaz 8 desk.

not a bad song. kinda sludgy too.

seems like the kick should be more powerful/louder. seems like its lacking low end

Sounds decent for a live recording.

... it is live right?

A mix like this calls for separation. I guess they really didn't care that there is no spacing in the mix. I could give you some suggestions, but I'd like to know what you did in the first place? A bit of detail could help.

I don't personally like the tune, and I'm into some pretty heavy shit.

I recorded the bass and drums together in one room, and overdubbed the guitars. The vocals were just done using handheld mics. The initial mix I did for the band while they were recording was much more seperated sounding but they didn't like it and asked me to distort to drums and bass.
