Ballsy Compressor for pumping bass tracks?

I have been reading that Digitech's Bass Squeeze is a great compressor for some pumping bass tracks. It's a pedal, but if it works, great, right?

Does anyone know of some really good compressors for pumping, ballsy bass tracks? I have read that the RNC is great on vox but lacks just a bit in the bass department. My plugins aren't cutting it. I used to have a Behringer, and it was alright, but I'm looking for better if possible.

Thanks,
Derek

If the Digitech works for what you need, go ahead and use it. I like my ART pro-vla on bass. I also use my Langevin (sometimes I use both) You are going to want a compressor with adjustable attack and release times that doesn't say Behringer on it.

Excellent. Any help is appreciated. The RNC has adjustable attack and release time on it. That may work. Thanks for the suggestions!

Wow, that's 2 votes. There most be something to this Pro VLA. I should check this out. I would have never guessed. Thanks!

2nd on the Pro VLA. No question.

don't bother with the RNC.....drums and bass are not areas where it excels IMO.

i've got a symetrix 425 that i really like on bass. the CL150 isn't too shabby either, but i prefer it as a guitar comp. many folks like the symetrix 501 on bass. i haven't picked one up as i'm happy with the results i get with the 425--could just be the way it interacts with my twangy, midrangey yammerhammer.

cheers,

Well, if I go for the RNC, it will be for vox. I'm going to buy the Keeley compressor for the guitar tracks. The Pro VLA sounds like a good match for tracking bass. I'll do some research on the symetrix 425 as well. Thanks!

We use an ART Tube MP on just about every bass player we record. I kid you not, it sounds like a million bucks... warm, yet distinct. I wouldn't put a mic through this preamp for all the tea in China. But for bass, it's awesome!

Wow, and I could score one on Ebay for like $60 used. But, isn't this a preamp? Does it also have a compressor? What do you use for a bass compressor?

I have personally found that using the "recording out" feature on my Mesa Boogie Mark IV sounds very nice as a preamp for my bass, but I'm always willing to try something new to see if it works better. I can't wait to try out the bass going through the Great River MP-1NV.

Right now, I'm specifically looking for a killer bass compressor so I don't rely on my software for compression.

Thanks for sharing. Do you happen to have an mp3 so I can hear the ART Tube MP in action?

Do you have the mp3 you can send to me? It's not letting me listen to the file. I never have this problem. I noticed it's a php page. Something weird is happening and it won't play on my WMP.

"WMP encountred an unknown error."

Here's a quick, one-take demo song from a Latin Jazz band we recorded last year....

Not the best example, but it's all I had on the computer right now and I'm too lazy dig through CD's right now. :)

No amp on the bass track, just an ART Tube MP.

.

Did you try downloading it? (down-arrow on far right)

The lo-fi and hi-fi play usually don't work on my 'puter at all

Usually, it's download or nothing.

Got it! I had to sign up to be a member first...

I really dig that recording. Very crisp and professional. I like the tune as well. It has that Santana vibe which is really cool. What Mic pres, compressors and mics are you using?

Was the bass done through the ART Tube MP straight to the board? No compressor?

I'm glad I got a chance to hear it, thanks :)

I use an RNC for tight, percussive, thumb-slappin,bass techniques and the ART TPSII for all other bass-playing styles!

What settings on the RNC do you use for bass tracks?

Hey Buck62 ... I thought this was about compressors! :D :D

Personally, I have this thing for the Symetrix 501 as a bass compressor. It's a good comp to begin with, but bass is what it excels at. Something like the Pro VLA can be cool, but optos in general are just way too slow, which can be good as an effect to give it more attack ... but does nothing for actual dynamics control.

The Symetrix is quite a bit cheaper too, thanks :)

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know.

BTW, I meant to say that we have an ART Dual MP, not a Tube MP (duh!), so the recording you heard was from a Dual MP, which I believe is just a rackmount 2-channel version of the Tube MP.

But you gotta admit, it still sounds darned good for a cheapo pre! :)
