I tried a search on this... I'm wondering if anyone knows or knows of a good link to handling this wiring set-up. I'm in the process of making a lot of XLR to XLR, but I have a handful of these XLR to balanced 1/4" to make... I'm using Canare Star-Quad balanced cable and Neutrik ends. I'm assuming on the 1/4" end, the longest contact is for the braided shield, the middle contact (center) is for positive, and the shortest contact is for negative; but I need to hear some expertise here before I commit. It's probably simple, but I want to be sure... Thanks, guys!

The pinout on the 1/4" side depends on what you're plugging it in to. But, on all my gear, tip is + / ring is - / the thing that looks like it crimps around cable takes the shield.
On the XLR side pin #1 is shield ground / pin #2 is + / pin #3 is -.

...Thanks Track Rat, for the confirmation; much appreciated, man!

caretaker 9 - make sure you make the shield the shortest length so if someone pulls on the cable the strain is on the shield.

Thanks for the tip, John... By the way, I love your site (SAE). I've learned alot there!

Mate - if you really want to do it properly - well like my techo does it - solder a green wire to the shield and then wrap it in heat shrink. The you have a red, black and green wire to solder - much neater, and more reliable.
