I have just been given loads of quarter-inch tape; NAB hub stuff: ampex 456, etc. When I try and play them on my machine (Tascam 34), one of two things happens:
a.Sound quality is OK, but lots of white powdery deposit forms on the tape path or
b. A squealing noise is heard and a brown deposit forms on the tape path.
Both take ages to clean from the machine.
I take it that this is due to poor tape storage. Is there any rescue or are they junk?
