Between being and nothing
Hey all!

I've posted two new songs on my site at Mp3.com. One of them I've already remixed twice.

The Insecure Single Girl

There's something on the mixes that I'm not quite happy with. Also, I'm getting "sparks" on my wave files now. I dunno if it's because I'm mixing the levels too high.

Some assistance on this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,

Checked out "The Insecure Single Girl"......

I think I know what you mean, there's something "not quite right" with the mix - things aren't sitting properly. Musically, on the other hand, things are very solid. Let's take it step by step....

(1st pass) - On the surface everything seems ok, bass is round and solid. Vocal seems appropriately clear. OK here we go (2nd listen thru)... Synth pads sound a bit artificial - the opening wave, and also the washes during the tune... Piano - somewhat indistinct, almost as if you weren't happy with the track (sample?) and tried to bury it in the mix to hide it a bit. Tracks either have to be heard where they're supposed to be or get rid of them - burying them a bit back just muddies things up. (3rd listen)... ok, the things that bother me - everything seems way too squashed - the piano has no attack, and the sax solo doesn't have any dynamics (it's supposed to be solo time - let it shine thru!!!) Also - your vocals tend to get hidden in the mix at times and is appropriate at other times - and yet, there's too much overall compression on them!

Overall - nice tune! All the tone is there - nothing is missing as far as clarity or bottom end, so there's nothing to change with those aspects... I think the biggest problem is overcompression on just about everything, resulting in very little dynamics to grab the listener's attention. Ride the gain manually a bit for your vocals to bring them out at the places in the mix they seem to get buried under.
Let that sax show a bit of peaking too! Musically, the tune is down, except for what appears to be a minor timing error in the piano at 0:43 into the tune... not immediately noticeable though. Great voice Shaky! :)

Hope this helps...

Thanks, B!

I figured that the tune sounded a little, erm, dead!

I'm gonna look in to this overcompression stuff and see what I can come up with.

I actually did compress my vocals in order to even out everything, but it does sound a little off.

Took a listen of You Misbehave.

On the first listen through...

1. Piano intro is sharp (dynamics) maybe too much compression? Almost clipping. Might want to let it breathe a little more.

2. Bass sits nice in the mix.

3. After the little drum fills, maybe stop the ride cymbal pattern and do snare hits on the accents near the end of the song. Those are dynamic points in the song and are lost under the ride.

4. The only other thing I notice in the mix is the lack of a defined stereo image. Everything bubbles up from the center. Panning the piano a little and the drums would really open up the soundfield.

Liked the song!

Thank you Chris!

I'm going to do the arm two tracks thing, do some adjustments on the drum track, and see what I can come up with.

I also bought a pair of high end Studio Monitor headphones, and they sound REALLY good, so I'm hoping that will help me fix things.

Thanks guys!
