Hey al,

ok..real n00b question...have not been recording for many years.

I have been doing it lately just recording my bass through DI and into a Steinberg C1 interface using audacity. but....I never get any sound i like. I am used to using an old school mixer.

so how do I set all this stuff up i have ordered.

Phonic Helix 18channel firewire board, Yamaha hs80m monitors, Headphones, dedicated laptop (PC).

and of course a couple of good mics..I know how they go.

the board will be in a rack mount and able to go mobile as I dont have room here to record drums.

I want to be able to take the board and Laptop to the rehearsal rooms that are sound proofed and set up all the mics and record. then bring home and mix and adjust.

but...how do I set it up so when i play it back it comes through the monitors and headphones on the board.

as for DAW I haven't got one yet. I learnt on Cool edit pro and had it mastered...but that's not an option...tried PT9 and just don't have the engineering degree to work it out.

any other pieces of equipment I need for a decent setup?

Hi and welcome!
I'm sorry to say, but if you are not getting good sound with Steinberg interface you either are doing something wrong (wrong gain staging, mic placement, etc) or the source doesn't sound good from the start (bad sounding instrument, bad room acoustics...).

If you are used to Cool edit give Adobe Audition a try and also try out Reaper.

You could post a clip for us, so we could hear what you are talking about.

2nd vote for Reaper as your DAW. You will be setting up the options/preferences with your interface in the DAW itself for input and output.

As to a good sound - DI is a very normal way to record bass, but if you are used to the bass sound from a big cabinet, you may not be pleased with the DI overall, in which case you need to add a plug-in set of effects/EQ to the track. GuitarRig, PodFarm, etc.
