After sitting down and working out some chords, I think I've got the pattern/meter set for these lyrics.

I still need to put together some kind of guitar break between verses and ending. This break might be bridge-ish in that it differs from the verse or chorus structure - not sure yet. Usually I just hammer away until something comes together LOL...

I'll post a rough recording once that's done and I work out the kinks....

Let me know what you think of the lyrics/meter/etc and how this reads....

Back In My Arms © Gerry Steele 2008

(Verse 1)
When it’s late at night and I close my eyes
I see a faded picture of you
And I wonder if tonight you might be
Thinking 'bout me too

And if a miracle could bring you back to me
Our love will last this time I know
Make my dreams the memories we shared
Before I let you go

(Chorus)
Am I in your dreams
Do you yearn for me
Am I a long forgotten love
Or just a faded memory
Of someone you were dreaming of

Want you back in my arms,
To hold you close to me
Without your love I can’t go on (edit)
Fill the emptiness within my heart
Been there since you’ve been gone

(Verse 2)
When our hearts were one, and you were my world
Well I thought it’d never end
Won’t somebody tell me how to
Bring you back again

Just my desperate heart, maybe in my mind
I hear a distant whisper of you
The silence barely broken,
Stirs the pain of losing you

(Chorus)
Am I in your dreams
Do you yearn for me
Am I a long forgotten love
Or just a faded memory
Of someone you were dreaming of

I want you back in my arms,
To hold you close to me
Without your love I can’t go on (edit)
Fill the emptiness within my heart
Been there since you’ve been gone

Break

Am I in your dreams
Do you yearn for me
Am I a long forgotten love
Or just a faded memory
Of someone you were dreaming of

I want you back in my arms,
To hold you close to me
Without your love I can’t go on (edit)

I can aolmost hear you singing it now - well some phrasing anyway.
This set is in your arena.
Bitter sweet love songs by Gerry Steele.
I'll be very interested in the lead break for this one as the story is has a deeper yearning with a time factor whereas the most recent song, (which is a killer diller) is in the now.

Preliminary Recording done

Here as promised earlier, is a really rough preliminary recording:

That works a treat.
It's also a treat to hear your vocals a little rawrer.
I love your smooth voice but there's a nice edge to the vox on this demo.
Well done: the lyric, melody & chord sequqnce work extremely well.

Thanks Ray - appreciate the kind words. I was trying to get a 70's/early 80's vibe for this one, with muted guitar for the verse and power chords for the chorus'. I apologize for the rough recording. It's just me and playing and singing with a drum machine onto a 2-track. That's my typical demo setup. I'll rerecord with various parts later. I still have another set of lyrics I want to work on then I'll probably record the two.

Good song, Gerry. I like your guitar playing. Kind of a country/rock feel of the late 70s.

Cheers,
Joseph (icystorm)

nicely done Gerry :):):)

Thanks Joseph and Nicole. The lyrics were originally intended to be for a ballad-style song. I had them around for a few months, and after a bit of a break pulled them out to work on them. I thought a few faster R&R songs were what I needed (got enough ballads for now) so I switched it up a bit... I was looking for a late 70's early 80's style rock tune...maybe something between Rick Springfield and Benatar....I'm just working on the drums then I'll re-record a multi-track version....:D

I likee......

Nice work Jerry. I think the uptempo was a good decision on your part. Can't wait to hear it completed.;)

...

I really like it... something in the rhythm/meter reminds me of the cars somehow, with a "pinch/dash" of 38 spl (prolly the power chords, lol)

your talented...

Great song, Gerry....as I listened to it, I thought "38 Special".

Get some bass and a guitar solo on the track, and that tune will rock.

Cleaned up and re-recorded

Back In My Arms - for your review

I spent the day re-recording the song on my "better" equipment.... It turned out a little cleaner/tighter than the last version. Let me know what you think of this song....

I commend you on the attention you've paid to this. You have chosen your words carefully to fit the metre and to convey the right mood. You have great technical skill in this area and it serves you well.

So everything is good, right?

Well, kind of.

The thing is, the lyrics didn't 'sing' to me the way that some have here. They didn't make me say 'wow!'.

I guess it's because, for all the care you've lavished on them, there isn't enough originality in them to satisfy my relentless craving for the novel and unusual. For example, "Back in my arms" is a phrase that is far too commonly used for my liking.

I daresay that, as a song, many listeners will find it very satisfying, and the song will have achieved its purpose. So I hope you do well with it.

Thanks - I try to get the meter right so it doesn't sound rushed - it doesn't always work out perfectly ;)

That's fair. I keep working on my lyrics with every song. I doubt I will be remembered as an outstanding lyricist...That award will go to guys like yourself, Rayc, his cowriter Terry and many others in this forum :D :D ....

Springfield and Benatar are great artists! Keep the good songs coming.
