Whats up dudes... I finally got a few free days and a wild hair up my ass so I decided to finish an arrangement and rough track a song I've been wanting to get done so I could hear it.
The guitars and bass are rough tracks, but doubled, no real care went into making sure nothing clipped and mic placement and yadda yadda, but what I wanted was to hear this song in its current arrangement and make a decision.

This is sort of a current radio style kinda song, and I want some opinions on the song itself, the arrangement, and any ideas anyone might have for it, especially vocal-wise.
I want vocals that could carry it over the top.
Dont kick my ass on the mix or any mistakes in the playing, I wasnt too awfully worried about that just yet. Guitar strings are old as hell, my bass pickup sucks, etc. The drums are the only thing I am 98% keeping so DO comment on those. The real tracks wont be done til later when I have another 9 songs ready to go and I can track them all at once with good placements and new strings, but all my drums are mostly keepers for now. There are no room mics in the drum mix yet.
Thanks for any advice, opinions, blah blah, etc. that you can offer, anything and everything will be considered. If this song sucks, dont hesitate to tell me. Just dont insult me, I get all mad and then call you names
Heh.
Peace!

Like you said, it would definitely fit right in with rock radio. What will make it or break it is of course, the vocal. But the guitars sound awesome.

I know you're not looking for mix stuff, but man those cymbals are wide. :)

The thing you've done well here is created a great rock bed for a lot of freedom of vocal expression. A lot of dynamic range is available to the vocal. Should be a good tune! Just don't let that guy from creed sing on it or I'll stop listening, and maybe call you names.

Tom

Don't like wide cymbals? :)

If you can come up with some vocal ideas to make this attractive to a record label, jot em down and send me a link. :)
I'll donate $1 of every million to a charity in your name.

Heh.

Thanks.

LOL...hmmmm. 35 cents to the Cleo fund. DEAL!

Give me a topic or two and I'll see if I got it in me.

Topic? Topics dont matter, its the feel. :)

I like darker lyrics and feel, as dark as you can get for rock radio, like maybe something along the lines and feel of "stupid Girl"

If you feel creative, take a dive...

I'll ride with it for a couple days. I just spun it again and a few things came to me right off. I'll let you know soon if I get something solid down.

Carry on. :)

Tubedude,

Sounds like the making of a great tune! Guitars sound awesome. How do you track them?? Which Amp, mic pre EQ?

Thanks,
Justin

Ummm, lets see.. does dead strings and random mic placement work for you? :) The secret is out, heh...
Its a Mesa dual rectifier in silicon mode through a 4x12 Marshall cab, top left speaker miced with an unplaced Sennheiser 441 into an RNP. Dead strings and all. Its just a rough, hopefully the "real" tracks will sound better than these. If not, then this one was a fluke and I'll be pissed :)
The bass has new strings though, I just dont like the pickup. Can't win. Its going direct into the RNP, too.
The guitars are all dry by the way, as is everything.
Thanks for checking it out!

I like it TubeDude. Guitars rock, sweet tones. Bass tone is good too. Drums are good too, nice and fat. You can't possibly be using the "fat drums fast for this". Snare sounds miced. I guess your drum kit is nice and loud (unlike these shit Pearl Forums I'm borrowing from a friend). Good stuff.

Thanks Fatt...

Hey Waldo, its working now, I found my old account password and stuff.... thanks for the help....

Gonna post another one in a day or two I hope, feeling really motivated and confident, plus I'm on vacation for 2 weeks.

Putting the floor on the house/studio tomorrow... :)

Wow,that was way sweet!Fantastic guitar sound.
I could be wrong, but I believe I heard a couple subtle timing errors on the drums.
Put some vox and leads on this!

tubedude - sluice
--------------------------

Hey ya'll,

As tubedude has really painted a basic canvas with q7mp3.mp3, of excellent sounds from his gear I couldn't resist putting down a few ideas this morning. It's not often we get a canvas, a classic musical construct like this to paint our own sounds upon, thanks tubedude. And I have taken that liberty. Perhaps Sluice can get some melodic ideas for lyrics from this, I dunno.

Possibly if sluice or some other will contribute lyrics, vocals, whatever, some of these ideas I present here may percolate through someone else or even remain intact to be tracked to some product in the future. But that's not the important thing, I think.

This is a 1 minute excerpt of a few ideas done with viola, it's a 1.47MB download from my nowhereradio.com site.

I've really just taken an opportunity to demostrate to the members of the homerecording.com board what sounds I can produce with these instruments, violin, viola and cello ... so for what it's worth, I hope you enjoy. And I did so want a chance to show off the Alien Revalver dirty Wah Wah on sarah.

If dark is what you are looking for I don't know if SLuiCe is your man. ;) :D

Tube, I think you have a great bed hear. The guitars are really sweet. It is totally set up for some great SLuiCe melodies/lyrics/vocals.

That snare drum is a little dry but like you said you have not added the room mic.

Studio - That was some pretty wild stuff you added. Nice playing. I am sure the demand will be there for your additions on this board ...maybe not on this song though  ;) :D :p ....of course we want those novellas you write for posts! :D

I wanna' hear Sluice's voice with 'dirty wah wah' on this tune ? Dobro can sing overdriven mouth trumpet backup harmony vocals ...

BEEZELBUUBA: "I could be wrong, but I believe I heard a couple subtle timing errors on the drums.

Sorry dude, I dont do much lead wise, I kinda lost the desire for leads a long time ago when the 90's went away. I'll probably work on some overlaid melodies though, I do like those. Leads just dont do much for me, seems like filler. I cant do vox. The drums probably are a tad out here and there, since I tap them out myself. Everything is me, and I'm not the best at anything.

Thanks Skids and Participant....

STUDIOVIOLS: Wow. That was something different and interesting, gives me ideas for a big string section in parts of the song. If anything I wish your levels were lower so I could hear the other music better and see how well it was fitting it.... the part you did in the chorus sparked a thousand ideas, and I thank you for that. It helped me visialize a vocal there.... cool stuff... you can try sending that PM again in a minute I'll clean it out some.... nice work though. I'm pleased that you found it worth your time and effort.

Looking forward to Sluices ideas, if any, also. That should be quite interesting as well.

I have the bass player from Outspoken coming by next week to check out my stuff... if he likes what he hears, we'll dig up a good, great, singer, and maybe he'll present it to thier manager and whoever and maybe help me find a producer with some money to burn. Scary. I'd like to do this stuff behind a Neve console. :)

Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming.

The next time I do something like this when whacked upon the head by the 'muse', I will watch my levels better and not step on what the original author put out, sorry if I was not sensitive to that, I just got excited ... I was RAwKiN dode !

I perform and record with REAL violin, viola and cello and maintain the gear to do that. If you decide to put a full string arrangement in this song, and you do that with MIDI, I will reproduce faithfully what you write if you wish, or I can go the other extreme and write it in collaboration with you.

Performing and recording string arrangements for artists just like you, Indie artists, bands and Indie labels is where I'm headed, I am developing demo at this time and man, what a fantastic BBS to do it on, this board ROCKS !!! ... literally

I will TOTALLY dig on having some real string arrangements...
I WILL keep you in mind. Cool shit.

This IS a killer board, I do agree. Spent many hours here.
You need to make a business card and portfolio and start mailing it to all the big budget studios in the nation, and even overseas.... you wil find some work, maybe not a lot, but people will grab onto it.

Peace.

Good to hear dude.

I'm off to bed, gotta be at work at 4AM, after working 'til 7PM...
Man, I really got a life.... Really....

W.
