As far as bang-per-buck goes: I bought a VTB-1/SPB1 combination "pack" a while ago; both sound good, and were well worth the money you pay.

They are both good peices of gear; Just so you know; their "combination", per se, sonically, is sort of irrelevant. Either could match up with any other cheaper or more expensive mic, or preamp, and sound/work just as good. That isnt necessarily so with dynamic mics however...the impedance switch and tons of clean, quite gain makes the vtb work nice with dynamic mics that may need those things...

pretty good entry-level combo. you could do a lot worse for the $200.

Can't comment specifically on the B1, but have to say I'm very impressed with Studio Projects gear in general. I'm a guy working with a limited budget, but also very critical about getting good results - a tough combination, right? Still I recently puchased both an SP C1 mic and a VTB1 pre, and am absolutely thrilled with the results I'm getting on my vocals with that combo. To me, this gear sounds first rate, certainly way better than I would have expected in this price range. I'm now anxiously waiting the arrival of a second VTB1 and a pair of SP C4 mics to add to my collection, (I believe this will be a good combination for acoustic guitar). For a total of around 200 bucks, I see no way you could be going wrong by getting a B1 and a VTB1.
