B-16 Not Recording

Hi. New to this forum. Recently helped a friend buy a B-16. Worked fine for a few days. Doesn't seem to record now. VU lights, record lights, etc. all look good. Yet nothing seems to get on the tape. When we playback, nothing on the VUs. Furthermore, it appears to have erased whatever was on the track. (We're using used tape.) Any suggestions--including obvious ones? We're pretty new to this and I don't want to rule out anything.
