I'm confused about MIDI. Since I got a MIDI controller--an Axiom, not a synth, I have to have to download sounds instead of using the "onboard" sounds?

Cubase comes loaded with VST instruments, right? So can I still create music without having to download additional stuff?

i thought this thread was going to be about something being intrinsically obvious

Oh, we have a nooooooooooob here.

Mellotron, love the name man, I'm a big fan of Portishead. You?

Yeah, the Axiom is just a controller, no sounds. Thats cool though, you have a lot of options. Yes, Cubase comes with a few VST instruments that you can use the Axiom to control via MIDI. The A1, I believe, is a VST instrument that comes with Cubase. Also, go to kvr-vst.com and do a search for free vst synths; there are a TON out there, and some good ones, too.

Heya MelloT, I just posted a reply to a question you had in the MIDI forum. This Q leads me to believe you don't have your controller setup in your DAW correctly. Here's a really brief quick rundown of what you'll basically need to do. You mention Cubase here, and Live in the other forum. I use Cubase LEso I'll explain for that. Install your Axiom drivers if there are any, and then plug it into the USB. Open Cubase. Load the 16 Track MIDI template they have as a default. On the left hand side you should see 2 drop down menues of interest. MIDI In and MIDI Out. Choose your Axiom USB for MIDI In. In the Cubase menu add a VST Instrument, like Synth1 which can be downloaded for free, use google. After that, move back to your MIDI Out drop down menu. Choose the Synth1 (or whatever VST you loaded). Monitor the track. At this point you should be able to press a key and hear a waveform.

There's a basic, crude rundown of what's needed. I highly suggest honing your google search skills if you need more info (and you will). MIDI can be very confusing at first, but it's pretty easy to gain a basic understanding after a bit of work.
