Avalon U5 worth it?

Hi there :)

I'm recording guitars directly into protools through my Profire 610 for later reamping. Would it be worth it to get an Avalon U5 to use as preamp instead of the octanes in the Profire 610?

I also have a SPL Goldmike "the cheaper one" and a DI box... would the Avalon U5 still be better?

I mainly use the Goldmike to pickup the re-amped signal.

Please throw in your 10cents.

Cheers.

Well, i'v kinda heard it's the cleanest "cheap" DI Preamp out there...
I assume i don't want the sound colored for further reamping.
I haven't heard one..

I can't just borrow or rent one thats my problem. I wanted to get it used.

question was rather, if anyone could recommend it for my purpose compared to my M-Audio or Goldmike pre's.

The short form is-yes. I own an AD2022, which uses the same DI circuitry as the U5. While the way you are recording is a bit nonstandard, if I was doing it that way, I haven't heard a DI box that will do a better job. Mostly, I use that function for bass, and I consider it the best bass DI box on the planet.-Richie

For DI purposes, especially stuff like tracking bass direct, the U5 is really, really, nice. My bass player has one and it puts my Demeter to shame (which is saying something!).

For microphone preamplification, you can do better for the $$$.

Yep, I'd look at the True P-Solo, Grace m101 or FMR's RNP.

M5? Sure. Best preamp Avalon makes (by quite a margin, IMO). But probably 3x the cost of the U5.

Yo Todzilla, note that the U5 is *not* a mic preamp, it's a DI box. The M5 is a one channel mic preamp that has the same DI circuitry as the U5, and as Massive Master points out, it's 3X the price of a U5. The AD2022 is basically a dual channel M5. They are all solid state. Like Massive Master, I'm not overly impressed by Avalon's tube pres, such as the 737, and I'd go to something like Pendulum for that, and never look back. For a clean solid state pre with that big transformer sound, the AD2022 is a *very* good preamp. It is often overlooked because of the tube hype thing. I assure you, they'll have to pry my AD2022 from my cold dead hands.-Richie
