I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
Anyone have any expierence with the Avalon U5? Im looking at getting a DI box, mainly for bass, keyboards, and possibly guitar.

I know not to go by the reviews on MusiciansFriend BUT, they were saying that for less money, you could get the same quality.

If i hear some good things about, i think ill buy it. The money isnt really a factor, as it is in my range. Plus, just the name makes it worth something in the eyes of the Snobby-ass public, and i guess it is nice to have well known/higher end names on the equiptment list.

Are there any other DI boxes i should look at, in the sub-$600 range?

I have one it is great, though not the best bang for your buck.

I have it shooting into a MOTU 828 mk II and it is great for bass though in all honesty my ART TPS II sounds better with direct clean guitar (surprised the hell out of me too !!).

The tone shaping filters are a nice addition.

I'll agree with Dr Simon. Good unit. I like it with acoustic guitars. Very good with keys too. Where it works well with bass is how the bass sounds in the mix. I get a really nice rich deep sound. Sometimes that not the sound I need and will go with something else. It's good, but it's not a do all unit.

thats cool, because im looking for something simple- i just want to get it into the computer with a nice deep/full sound.

too bad musiciansfriend is on backorder!! i hate that...

have a look at the ART TPS (it is simple and affordable). It is not in the same league as some of the big boy Pres however I have been very pleasantly surprised by this little beauty and for 200 bucks !!

Well !!

It works really nicely on clean guitar and bass though Id have a mic running into the 737 or the Focusrite for vox first !

Year, that Radial kit is nice!

I have one of the Radial A/B/Y boxes.

It was not cheap but it sure sounds nice !

I use it to split Bass signal and send half to the U5 and the other half to the amp which gets miked.

cool unit - but when i used it and the sansamp bass driver on bass the sans amp won everytime...

not saying it's better or anything...but you can find something cheaper you may enjoy even more.

the really cool thing with the U5 is the line level out...doesn't eat up your mic pres...more boxes need this! radial...are you listening? and make it sub 200 bucks with an attenuator! and i need a back rub too!

Mike

yeah i need to check out the radial stuff too.

I have had one for 3 years, like it. I would check out the new universal audio d/i's also.

I love the U-5 on bass. Two things you won't find on a cheap DI box: The line level out means you don't have to tie up a mic pre, and the tone shaping function gives you a wide variety of useful EQ curves.

Another option that might not occur to many for a DI is the Littlelabs IBP box. The box is extremely useful for fine tuning phase issues on multiple mic'ed instruments, but as a bonus you get a damned fine direct box. It also has the line level output option of the U5, although no tone shaping. So for about the same price as the U5, you get a great DI plus a "free" phase adjustment tool.

(Note: The IBP jr. gives you the phase tool with no DI, so if you want the DI you need to get the regular IBP).
