Avalon M5 or Great River MP-1NV?

Anyone have any thoughts on these two? I did not see the M5 on Dan Richard's listening sessions and wondered how they compared.

Yikes! Wrong Forum. Sorry about that.

I've got both.

They've got different flavors. One is ****(snap)****

Then I woke up...

What does that dream mean, doc?

Can only speak for the 1NV--I own it. It is superb. Very versitile. Cooks on bass DI as well. Pluss Dan K is a Minnesota superhero. I didn't even consider the Avalon.

I dont own either but my pet peeve is gear that I cant put in my rack, so I vote for the mp1nv.

Middleman, the Great River NV is one of my favorite mic pres. It is without a doubt a first call mic pre that you will keep for 20 years.

It has some color but it is not dark at all. Stick it in front of a vocalist and you will be amazed. I get more complements on my mics when it is the GR that is really the hero.

It has a very forward sound to it which is hard to explain. It really pushes a vocal or electric guitar right up in the mix. I had one guy describe it as if his vocals had a little bit of compression on them.

Jet-rocker has it right, on every point. If you turn up the input gain and drive the input transformer into saturation you get a nice clean but thick guitar or bass sound. Clean distortion if that makes sense. :)

But by turning down the input gain and cranking up the output gain (which it has plenty of ) you get a nice clean a more transparent sound.

There are some other nice features that make it versatile but don't want this to turn it to a book. :)

The bottom line is a great investment in a piece of pro-gear. No wall warts no cheap chassis. Dan has done a great job on all of the MP products but the 2NV and 1NV are must haves in my humble opinion.

The only bummer Darrin is the 1NV is not rackable at this time. Of course the 2NV is a 1U unit but right now there is no rack adapter available from GR for the 1NV. Dan's goal was to keep the price down and whether it be right or wrong his impression is home studio guys want desktop products.

Middleman not sure if this helps or not but sounds like you are on your way to getting some nice gear.

Thanks all, I was going for an RNP this week but thought I might just save a few more months and go for the BIG TUNA!!!

20db.com, Good data on its output.

I know its a bit of an investment but try and look at it as some thing you will have in your studio for a long time. There are a number of pieces I would get rid of first before I would part with the GR.

I am sure the RNP is a good piece and you may find it would some thing to add down the road. But all in all the NV is the baseline that I think you will compare any other purchases against.

I have used the GR in the studio with a lot of high-end gear, BUT I have also used the NV with a lot of basic gear that you will find in any home studio. Gear such as SP C-1, Mackie 8buss, Marshalls etc. so no matter how modest your setup (which I should have asked about) you will hear the difference.

i just ordered a mp2nv (i dont have it yet) and everyone says this thing is THE pre.
supposedly it is molded after the neve 1073 design.
my only complaint is there is no low cut switching.
i would advise you to hold off and go for the big tuna. i think it would be well worth the wait plus i think this unit will hold its re-sale value well.
when i was shopping for my pre mr 20db.com was of great help to me too.

maskedman72, please report back with you get a chance to run some electrons through the MP-2NV. I can almost guarantee a few of the words you will use to describe your results. :)

I always like to hear how others describe how the NV sounds to them. I do my best to describe my personal experience but it's nice to have someone else confirm what I am hearing.

Also, thank you very much for the kind words about my help. I do this a lot more for passion than I do for profit. :) The best part is meeting other passionate folks who love music and enjoy the entire recording process.

Let me know how it goes and drop me an email when you get some tracks recorded. Love to hear some of your stuff.

maskedman, you didn't have to pm the results. we all want to know how everything is going.

Anticipating that big tuna is definitely exciting. In my case, my flavor of tuna is the VIPRE. Damn, I want one!
