Automation? Help needed.

Yes I am a newbie. I think I know what automation is, but am curious how to
use it. Do only certain programs allow for it?

Currently I have Vegas (version 1. something) and Sound Forge. Do I need to
buy a different program or something?

Sorry for sounding really dumb, but I would like to know....

Vegas dosen't have automation, You don't need to have it, Vegas has other provisions. It is nice to have though. Cubase and Cakewalk (I'm not sure about others) have automation built into their virtual mixers. Basically you just record your fader moves. When the song plays back, the faders do what you did with the mouse, it's a pretty cool tool. If you are happy with Vegas though then keep with it!
