Hi, I've just joined the forum hoping to get some advice ...

About 15 years ago I was given a DAT tape by a well known musician that I met while doing some renovation work at their house. Basically I have no proof that the tape is genuine and wanted to find out how I can get it authenticated.

The tape has a label with the "artists name - Mixes - Date" hand written on it. So I've no idea what the recording is .... Could be nothing on it for all I know lol

I live in the UK and was hoping that someone on here might have some advice as to how I can get this authenticated ?

Thanks J

About the only thing I can think of is forensic analysis of that tape against a known reference...like the artist's commercial releases. Comparing the sounds, mainly the vocals, to see if they match...etc...etc.

Seems like a lot of effort though.
I mean...can't you simply tell if indeed it is what it is by just listening to it?
Is there a need to officially "authenticate" it?

Well this artist is very well known and is quite distinctive so listening to it should work .... Only problem is that I don't have a dat player !! I've never heard what is on it. He was playing some music when I met him and had 4-5 tapes and gave me one of them. I didn't want to ask him to play it so I could check at the time haha

Anyone have a dat player and want to listen to this with me or suggest a place I can go nr London ??

J

You can probably find a DAT player on eBay for $10!!! :D

The technology just didn't stay around too long....

I bought a DAT recorder in 1993. It was gone by 1998. I used it on 5 occasions. I still have the 5 tapes. I don't want them authenticated. I don't want them remembered. I don't want them heard ! :D

Not sure why you would want them 'authenticated - despite the artist giving you the DAT, it does not mean you own the rights to those songs.

I have a dat player. It's a DA88.

When you say authenticated, do you just mean you want to hear it? I'd digitise it for you, if you want.

-J-,

I prefer that you destroy that DAT recording - I was just in a dark place at that time and wouldn't want those recordings to get around.

Thank You

So they can make big bucks flogging it as a bootleg when the artist meets their demise !
Hang on, was that a bit cynical for a joke ? :D

Yeah. I wouldn't make that kind of comment about a newcomer with a mysterious name like "J". I don't want to be sued for libel. Or be 'taken out'.
