OT1H you can get pretty inexpensive LDC mics to mod. OTOH, you don't have to take this one apart and risk messing something up, so you can tinker with it to your hearts content, and probably mod it and remod it. I'm considering getting it to do something like a Royer mod when I get a bit of spare change and time. I'd say go for it, not that much money and free shipping in teh US. I've been doing a fair amount of research on DIY mics, but haven't actually started a project yet. The Aurycle tube mic seems like a decent candidate as well for something like the Analag R8 http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php?topic=22825.0 or the Gyraf G7, also, the R8 might be good as the capsule may have the high end boost. I posted some links in the other thread about DIY mics.
 
I have the first one you posted but that's not what you're asking, is it?
Anyway, I paid $200 for one fully assembled but the guy never would acknowledge that it was from a kit.
He was disappeared from E-Bay quite suddenly.
As it turns out, I'm keeping it. Wouldn't know how to sell it anyway.
I replaced the original 12AX7 tube with a GE 12AU7.
Took away a lot of the oomph but added some quality.
I've ordered some more tubes and time will tell whether this has been a good purchase.
In the meantime, it rates at about 7 out of 10.
