Traitorous Usurper
The guy at Guitar Center (yeah yeah I know...) was trying to sell me this brand new Audix mic instead of the SM57 that I showed up there to buy. I'm only starting to learn about all this mic stuff in general (obviously...I just bought my first 57!) and I realize that I should have asked him the slew of questions that normally show up in these threads, but I figured I'd rather check with you guys. I know the 57 is generally the preferred "utility" mic--everybody needs a few, they work on everything, and so forth. What do you think of the Audix I-5 for purposes of general recording (snare, guitar amps...)? It was 10 bucks more than the Shure, and I decided to go with reputation on this one. I figure if I'm wrong, it's not like 57's are hard to get rid of.

i saw the same audix mic and wondered the same thing. i would never be without a 57 but audix dont make too much junk either i love my d-4 for the floor tom.

Hmmm...I figured out how to get an answer to this...

I HEARD IT SOUNDS AS GOOD AS A U87!!!!!!

Okay, let's see what happens.

I just started seeing ads for it in the recording magazines. They really talk it up. I am interested in finding out more about it too.

Did the guy at the store offer to let you hear it? …and perhaps compare the two mics side by side?
