audix d2 vs. audio technica atm25

first off i would like to say hello and introduce myself. my name is jason and its nice to meet you. okay so i have narrowed it down to 2. its very hard to do when you can't hear/test anything and you are on a limited budget. if i had the money i would go 421's all around but i can only afford one for the floor tom. this post is in regards to rack toms. i am deciding between the audix d2, which seems to have a similar frequency response to the 421 and the atm25 which has gotten some good reviews as well. i just would like to get some experienced peoples opinions on these mics in this application as well as some input to other mics that i haven't considered yet. i am playing sort of folk rock but would also like a mic that can do well in most recording situations as i will be recording other bands as well. both mics seem to have good reviews which is what is making this so hard. i am leaning toward the d2 so any help would be great. thanks alot, Jason

I have the atm25, and i love it. I use it sometimes to mic bass cabs, but mostly on the kick. I just stick it in there, point it at the beater, and I get a great sound everytime. Don't have to spend a lot of time looking for that "sweet spot". Don't have experience w/ the d2, so I can't comment on that. Hope this helps a little.

kindof, have you ever used it on rack toms? i am going for an re20 for kick/bass, so that is covered. thanks, J

Using the ATM25 on floor tom. It'S mid peak may be a little low for hi toms. I prefer using the MD421 on higher toms. The ATM25 gives a nice BOOMMMMMMMMM on the floor, very very nice.

thanks for the info tenkas, i've just about decided to go with the audix d2's, unless anyone knows a reason why i shouldn't. most people i have talked to are using the atm25 on floor tom or kick drum so i'm assuming that its frequency response is more flattering in the lower region, and probably not the best bet on rack toms. i wish i could afford 421's all around but i'll just have to wait a couple years for that. thanks again guys! I own several ATM25 and they do best on kick and floor tom, depending on what you want. There is no high end in this model, so higher tuned drums have no sparkle/snap, and sound somewhat nasal when compared to other mics.

My Audix D4 provides lots of stick crack on the toms as well as a nice bottom, but it is not as fat sounding as the ATM25. I want an Audix D6, cuz I want one...

I've played on D2 mic'ed bass amps very successfully. No experience, no ownership of D2 other than this. I understand these are very good tom mics, though.
