Last night a few of us had the priviledge of having Harvey Gerst in the chatroom (even though I cant use my mic because it just locks up the system)...Anyway, he gave a great suggestion for auditioning mics...It may have been mentioned here before, but worth being mentioned again....
Buy an hours worth of time in a studio that has several of the mics you are considering...take turns with them talking and singing (or playing the acoustic or whatever)...have the engineer keep of track sheet of the order.....have them burn a CDR of the sesion.....take it home...without looking at the track sheet listen.... note what mics you liked....give it a few days to a week and do the same....do this a few times....then compare notes and see what mic you thought sounded killer more often....this will be the mic you are looking for....make sure audition as many mics as you can that they have, not matter what you heard about them.....
Again, thanks Harvey......that information ranks up there with....
Eds rant post on recording and mixing (finally Im going to share some secrets...)
Shailat's articles on reverb and compression....
Bruces notes on his drum recording session....
several more...too many to mention
