Can a control surface be used with Adobe Audition 2.0?
I downloaded the trial version and have been seriously considering buying the program. I searched the facts at Adobe and could not find an answer. I would like to get a small mixer to make my adjustments. Levels, Panning, EQ etc.
Thanks!

Yeah I think Mackie´s Big Knob for example can be used with it

The big knob is just a small mixer with a big knob.........Its not a control surface.

I think he means something the Behringer BCF2000.

I'm using a Mackie Control Universal with 2.0. Control Surface compatibility started with Cool Edit Pro, but would only work with the Syntrillium Red Rover until v.2.1. I used a Tascam US428 for a year and a half with 2.1, Audition 1.0 and 1.5 (until the Tascam fried its little brain) and then I got both the Mackie and 2.0. One serious enhancement with 2.0 is that the control surface gestures can be written to the volume/pan envelopes just like it were an analog setup.

I'm using the MCU with Audition...no problems. Check your manual. Set up is a snap.

One thing that drove me nuts with the MCU: it has to have the latest firmware to work with CEP/AA. The Mackie website has a download, but the upgrade file is in the form of a MIDI file...so you need to have MIDI playback capability in order to load it into the MCU. I used Windows Media Player, which worked fine.

Yup. I'm concerned about noobs to AA who don't know that it used to be called Cool Edit and so they don't find this forum here. The talent here is excellent. So if I can talk people into shifting over to the other place, then it'll be easier for newcomers to the software to find that talent, cuz the forum over there is actually called 'Cool Edit/Adobe Audition'. I've been after the site manager here to change the name of this forum for years, but he's unreachable or unmovable. But maybe the people here are more responsive.

does anyone know if the m audio projectmix i/o is compatible with AA 2.0?

OK, newbie question time....:o

This "Control Surface" you are referring to, is this basically like a typical mixer board that you can some how interface with CEP/AA1.5-2.0 that will allow you to use the mixer like you were recording in analog??? (In a nut shell)

I've been using CEP 2.0 for a while now, and actually today I'm upgading to AA 1.5. I also see that you can step up to 2.0 for 130 bucks which doesn't seem to be too bad.........just trying to figure out how to get along in this PC based world :( (Where's my 8 track??!!?! :o :D )

Thanks,
Rick

A control surface enables you to write automation envelopes without using the mouse, if the software provides that function. Before Audition 2.0 there wasn't much point in using one with Audition.

Control surfaces are in essence just a more complex mouse. They don't in themselves have any audio function any more than a mouse does, but can control software that processes audio.

Control surfaces are in essence just a more complex mouse.

Yeah, a $1000 mouse that weighs nine pounds and will eliminate 90% of the aggravation of mousing your way through a mix.

No offense, Mr Ozpeter, when my Tascam US428 died I couldn't wait for a replacement. Even though my Mackie Control has no audio function, it makes life sooooooooooooooo much easier...does your mouse have an undo button?

Oh, I'm not denying the usefulness of a control surface, just trying to make it clear that you don't plug a mic into it (unless it also has a mixer function of course...).

I have the BCF2000 always ready at hand in front of my PC keyboard but for what I do, I still tend to draw envelopes by hand. It's a personal thing, and also depends on the work at hand.

Now can anyone tell me why Mackie doesn't make a combo mixer/FW interface/control surface, i.e. an Onyx with motorised faders etc?

I don't know. The build quality of the Mackie seems to be very high, and Mackie mixers are widely used in home studios. Perhaps they think the market is served by the Firewire connectivity of the Onyx series? Or that there's no room in the MCU for audio? The latter may be true, in an ergonomic sense, since there's not much space left on a rather large unit for more controls.

Or perhaps they are developing a control surface/audio interface. They are certainly capable of it.

OTOH, I wanted the MCU specifically because it didn't offer audio: I prefer components to all-in-one boxes, so the issue is not too pressing for me. In my old-fashioned way of thinking, having a mixer that mixes and a control surface that controls seems very natural...but it's certainly not the way the current trends seem to be going.

Yes, I managed to use mine perfectly using the Mackie Control protocol during my demo period (which ended prematurely because I did a re-format, I re-installed but it won't let me use it  )

im gonna see into this whole control surface thing although i guess i could kiss my delta1010 bye with the maudio project i/o :(
