When installing the 2496 in the add new hardware wizard of Windows XP at some point it asks me to insert my windows xp installation cd. I don't have this anymore, I don't know if I ever did...XP came installed on the system. Its looking for some file. I clicked on browse and the file it seems to be looking for is called wdmaud.drv. That wouldn't be on my XP disc would it? What should I be doing?

It appears as though its looking for a WDM audio driver.

What driver are you installing from the audiophiles cd ?

Most use the ASIO driver for XP.

Many OEM installs of Windows also copy the setup disk to a separate directory for this.

I would start off doing a search for that file on your hard drive. Could be that's the location of the file and the Windows setup software.

If not, contact your manufacturer and tell them you lost your CD they usually replace this for a nominal fee.

Outside of this, you will need to buy an upgrade version to get the OS files at a cheap price.

Often, a pc supplied without XP disk has a copy of the XP setup files on an extra D: partition of the hard drive. Have you got a D drive? (If the CD/DVD is D then you haven't.)

But it may only be asking for the XP disk because it thinks that may have the driver files for the card. Well, it doesn't. Instead you need to use the "install from a specified location" option and persuade the hardware wizard to get the driver files from the M-audio driver installation CD. So you may not need the XP disk at all.

when it looks for that file, try pointing it to c:\windows\system32 If the computer has ever had a sound card it's probably already there...

thanks guys I found the driver in windows/system 32. The only thing I'm having right now is that its not playing back sound yet. I have it hooked up to my external receiver through the sdpif input. I have tried both in and out. On the mixer page I see the levels going up and down in the master area and the WAV/1/2 Out but thats it. I've turned up the levels and all that but nothing. One thing I've noticed is that on the SDPIF page when I have it plugged into either the in or out of the breakout cable it says that the digital signal is invalid or not present. Any ideas?

I finally got sound when using the "monitor mixer" function.
