Audio-Technica M8000 vs Shure M57 for recording guitars

I'm not sure if this has been asked before (I did a search, but didn't find the specific mics I'm asking about), but I found a deal on Audio-Technica M8000 mics online and I'm considering purchasing them. I plan to use them in my home studio to mic guitar amp(s) often and possibly for vocals very rarely. I'd like to know if you have used them and what your impressions are compared to SM57s (which I've read are pretty much the go-to mic for budget conscious home recording newbies). What am I giving up compared to just getting a used SM57? The price difference is quite significant, like I can get 2 M8000's with mic stands and cables for the price of one used SM57.

Is it even going to make a big enough difference in my home studio to worry about it or should I just go for the deal and stop over-thinking this? I'm looking for anything that stands out about these mics, like "they work great for vocals, but stink for mic'ing an amp" or "I've used those microphones and it's worth the extra month (even with the deal) to get the SM57's instead".

Thanks in advance.

First off, let me say I have never used an AT8000. Given the price of the 57 being well under 100 used, I can't see a reason to pay even less.

Even at a beginning level, recording is not a cheap hobby. Do not try to skimp on mics. It is a crucial element to the end result. I would make the 57 the bare minimum.

Thanks to you both for your responses. That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for.

I know it's frustrating to have so many newbies posting the same (stupid) questions all the time, but it's hard to find good info when you don't know what to ask. I appreciate you taking the time to post your thoughts. I'm going to go with the SM57.

I have a pair of gls es57 and I love them on cabs. One sounds better to my ears than the other. Good luck finding a mic and welcome to the forum and don't worry about the questions we have all been there at some stage. We are here to help :)
