Hey everyone,
I need to buy a kick drum mic for recording some drum tracks, and of course I'm on a tight budget--- I would like to get the 25 Pro cause of the price, But, I have heard that the ATM pro25 can be very difficult to get a good kick drum sound, and sometimes sound like garbage. . . is the ATM25, really that more reliable. .anyone have experience using either of these mics. . ?

any input would be great!

FYI: It would be used to record on a Tascam 424 mkII, 4 track cassette recorder:

The ATM25 is a superior mic, IMO. I have heard people on this forum say good things about the pro series, and it's not bad. If you get ATM you will not have to upgrade, and I gaurantee no buyer's remorse. It's also way more solidly constructed. I do a lot of live work, so this is important.

It's pretty true, which is why some don't like it. The Beta52, for instance, has a bigger LF bump at close proximity than the ATM25. Makes the ATM really useful on other things as well, like bass & guitar cabs and horns.

For the same money, I would also recommend the EV N/D 868. Awesome kick mic. Heavily EQ'ed toward kick drum, with a pretty drastic mid scoop.

Yeah, get the ATM25.

Boingoman is right, I have the pro25, I like it, I get it because I couldn´t afford another mic like beta52, d112 or atm25. Now I need to upgrade. It´s not the first item on my list but I know I have to do it, sooner or later.

Are you planning to record a demo or something with the 424mkII??. For that matter the pro25 could be fine.

Yeah, exactly, . . .

The kick mic will mostly be used for recording demos, and laying down ideas with a bass player, and guitar-- which is why I'm swaying toward the cheaper pro25, and beside it will be my first attempt at recording at home.

But, with that said-- I have a pretty good ear, and cant stand crappy audio-(Not that the pro25 is crap) Just that quieter, and slightly more accurate atm25 mic, might be the way to go, if I ever decide to do anything else with the mic beside demos stuff.

ahhhhhhh, decision decisions .. .

There are lots of ATM25 on eBay for less than the $140 (shipped) you can get them new from Zzounds.

I own several, all used and all from eBay. Great drum mics and bass cabs.

I like my ATM25 for kick more than most mics I have tried. At the studio I work at, I preferred the ATM25 on a Yamaha Custom Birch kit over the D112 or RE20.

Get the ATM25. I have been able to get a lot of different kick sound out of it. From really clicky to a big ole thump a little positioning and EQ makes a big difference with this mic.
