Hey everyone,

I've recently been doing some mic shopping... I'm seriously thinking about buying these two mics....I'm planning on purchasing a GT66 cos I've heard nothing but flawless about the Groove Tube Vipre stuff....

But, I got sort of troubled when it came to the AT3060... I've heard alot of good things about it for acoustic guitar... a bit dry on vocals but what surprised me more was that the local music stores where I live (san francisco bay area) do not carry it in stock.

Anyone own an AT3060? Can they say some of the huge flaws about it? I don't want to be purchasing some crappy mic.

The other mic, I'm contemplating to replace it is the Groove Tubes GT55 cos it's modelled after the GT66 and the ability to change from dynamic to condenser.... this will be used to mic an acoustic guitar.

It is comparing so well with high end super expensive so much microphones that the difference barely isn't even noticable! This is so true!

Go for the GT55! I was turned onto it by a producer friend who told me about a half price sale on a UK suppliers website. Superb sound & versatile!

gt55

I don't own the AT, but I record with the GT55 quite a bit. It does a great job on vox and accoustic. Maybe a little bright.

The AT is a fun mic, but sort of a niche mic. I like that it runs on phantom, because external power supplies are annoying.

It generates a fair amount of harmonic distortion, but I think it sounds nice in doing so, it's mostly 2nd overtone. That kind of richness can get overdone, but on the whole I think it works. It definitely doesn't sound anything like any other mic I have.

It works well on sparse acoustic guitar parts, anything too busy would get overwhelming. It's better for stuff that is picked by the bridge, that gives the 3060 plenty of high end to add those sweet overtones, keeps it from sound muddy.

AT-3060 uses the same capsule as the AT-3035 except the 3060 is phantom power ready. i think the AT-3035 sounds awesome. at my local store, i have tried out the NT1A, AT-3035 and C3000B. The mic that had the best clarity, low noise and high end visibility was the AT-3035. but then again, it works very well with my voice and might not be the same for you. i like the NT1A though...and man, the C3000B was terrible at highs and noise floor.

Both mics use phantom power, and share a case, but other than that I think they are somewhat dissimilar. I am not certain if they have always used or use the same capsule; some pictures of 3035s I've seen look identical, and some look like they don't have a frontplate, as the 3060 does.

But the basic difference is that the 3060 has a tube circuit, and the 3035 does not.
