is a Audio Technica 4050 cm5 just the expanded name of a Audio Technica 4050

or is there a different cm5 model or something?

That is the cardio-muscular version. It weighs about 30 pounds and you can build up your 'ceps" while recording.

The AT website lists the CM5 as a discontinued model of the 4050. The 4050 is still manufactured and sold but not the cm5 version. I don't know the difference though. I have two 4050s that I use pretty regularly.

well theres one on ebay and im unsure if i should go for it or not

the old frequency response was a little different, and the shockmounts were slightly different. pretty much the same mic though.

and a great mic it is! i really like the AT4050, a slightly gritty mic that works well on a lot of sources..

The AT4050 is the first 'more expensive' mic that I really saw the value in - you can't get a nice sound like that from a cheap mic! It's a great, versatile mic with a slight lift in the highs which works great with most acoustic instruments and vocals. :)

thanks alot guys .. i bought one on ebay for 400 with a shockmount and box .. brand new, pretty sweet. but yeah i bought it a couple of days ago it was from a ebay store and it wasnt the cm5 version. my m-audio tampa arrived today :D

sweet. make sure to try it in figure-8 mode.

really, do you like that the most .. for vocals i planned on using the cardioid

yeah, I think it sounds good on vocals. just try it both ways, it won't kill you!
