Was browsing the Audio-Technica website...

The 4033, 4050, and 4060 all have a 2-micron diaphragm? Wow! Learn something new every day!

I wonder if they're mylar diaphragm?

Anyhow, that's certainly a company going in the right direction!!!

I swear by the 4033s. It works just about anywhere you put it.

Is that only for the new ones? I have a 4050 from about 5 years ago and wonder if it is the same as today.

A VERY good question. I have no idea. Audio-Technica?

I just started reading up on this series myself.
Although I havent listened to any of them yet, I have yet to read where anyone has complained about any of the 40 series.

Im watching for new posts. :D

I don't see any mention in the PDF datasheets for the 4040 that I own.

I got mine new from eBay, $225, and feel it is entirely worth the money. It ain't a Neumann, but it didn't cost like one either.

I'd like to own a pair of 4050, also.

bgavin,

I've never used the 4040. In all honesty, I'd probably buy a 4033 also and see how the two compare for awhile. Eventually, you'll find you use one over the other most often. Then sell the one you don't use as much and buy another of the one you do.

Personally, I've not liked the 4050 as much as the 4033. Still, the 4050 is a good mic and I wouldn't hesitate to use one ANY day!

I like the AT4033's good mic..I've heard the AT4050 but never really used it..I also like the AT4060..they make some pretty nice mics..Never tried the AT4047,been meaning to though..

The folks at Audio-Technica are polite, friendly and helpful.

And, they do get some decent respect from some of the pro audio designers I know.

I recently purchased an AT4040 to use primarily on my vocals. Although I haven't used it much yet (I've been riddled with the flu and colds this month) I would say it still a bit strong in the upper mids for MY voice. Though not nearly as bad as my old MXL mic! To be honest though, since I recieved my AT 4040 I've been pretty congested, this may have something to do with it. has anyone used a 40 series mic that may have a little less upper mid bump?

"The 2-micron-thick, vapor-deposited gold diaphragm ", I don't know whether Mylar means a material, but they're made out of gold if thats what you meant :D

It's Mylar coated with gold. The gold makes the mylar conductive so along with the back plate, it can function as a capacitor.

Mylar is a trademarked name (like Band-Aide and Kleenex) for ultra-thin polyester film.

The diaphragm is what the gold actually gets vapor-deposited on to.

I'm wondering if the diaphragm is Mylar (some-sort of ultra-thin polyester film) or some other type of material, for example, titanium or nickel. More than likely, it's Mylar, and I can almost guarantee it's not nickel.
