Which microphone is best suited for both male and female vocals for R & B and Hip Hop music ?

You have to keep in mind that the 3035 is a more expensive mic - it costs twice as much and it's probably worth it. I've heard a whole lotta' really good vocal tracks done with that mic over the last few months, and I've been very impressed. I get the feeling it's one of the best values out there in vocal mics.

That's not to knock the B1. The sound clips I've heard with it are pretty good. A little plosive, but nothing a good pop filter wouldn't fix. Sounds really good for $100 mic but probably doesn't compare as well to a good $200 one.

I recently bought a C1 and compared it to my 3035. Really there was no comparison the c1 was a better mic. Much more clear, transparent, detailed, and less simblant. Even after i mic modeled, applied eq, and processed the 3035 track the C1 still sounded a hell of alot better. I would spend an extra $30 bucks and get the c1 over the 3035.

I agree with Galla. When you buy a Studio Projects mic,you are not only buying a mic but you are also getting excellant customer service.I've heard that Alan has even helped out customers that have broken their mics by pilot error like dropping it.Now that's customer service. If your budget is really tight you could also check out the B-3 for $160.

i think i'd get the Behringer B2 over the at or the SP B1.... all it is is the rode Nt2..but doesn't cost $400.. only cost 200

I own a pair of SP B1's, and have used a friends AT3035 several times. Between the two, for the application mentioned, I'd reach for the AT3035.

i have a B1, a C1 and a 3035 and i like the B1 better than all of them

I really disliked the 3035 but have never tried the B1. So I say whatever you do, stay away from the 3035.

I've owned the 3035 and used the B1 - they're definitely different flavors. For vocals, I'd probably go with the 3035 - there'll be less to eq out.

Don't you just love the solid and definitive direction you can get from a thread like this?......

Howyadoin,

I've used the 3035 for everything; ambient mic'ing, acoustic guitar, hip-hop, rock and folk vocals, it's always worked very well. You can get them for $149 on sale, it's a great bargain IMO.

I've never used the 3035, but when you have a rather even split of opinion regarding two mics--one of them at half the price--that's something to consider.

I'll only add what I've read in several reviews, including the recent SOS review of the B1... the sound I put in front of my B1 is what I get back. Very little change. This factor can be good or bad, depending on your tastes, but I like it. I spend quite a bit of time working with mic placement to get the sound I want (mainly acoustic guitars) and then let the B1 capture it. Very little EQ needed afterward. Works well for me and my style of recording although, again, I've never AB'd the more expensive 3035.

Go with the AT. They make terrific mics.

I have/had both mics. (I sold the 3035) Neither did for me on vocals. I find more work for the B1. I'd say save a few more bucks and go a better mic. As mentioned the C1 would be a good choice. I would also look into a used AT 4033. Lots of good choices out there.

The AT3035 will handle vocals and guitar cabs better.

The SP B1 will handle acoustic instruments and drums better.

Better being subjective of course!

I wasn't very clear as to why I didn't like the AT3035... every vocalist I put through it hated the way they sounded and it was dull on overheads. That's all I used it on but considering those are probably some of the most used places for an LDC, it didn't work for me. I prefer the studio projects C1 over the 3035 and probably the behringer B1 over the studio projects C1 for vocals and overheads. All 3 didn't do it for me on acoustic guitars.

Freshmatty is selling a Groove Tube Md1b for $300 shipped. THERE'S the best deal around. It is a great mic!

Warhead nailed the strengths of each mic. AT4040 though gets you there on vocals, amps, acoustic instruments, drums.

I always love the New In Box gear which has been used a couple times. I wonder if the definition of new has changed in the past couple years with the "popularization" of eBay.

To answer your question - either mic can be better. You really cant sit here and ask if A is better than B when both are suited for some of the same purposes and expect to get the "right" answer. If I am recording a deep voice and you are recording a high, nasal voice, my suggestion might not work so well. There are tons of variables. When it really comes down to it, you really just need to try these things out. And heck, if you dont like it, you can always sell your "new in the box but used" mic on eBay.
