Audio Tape to Computer?

I'm trying to figure out how to move recordings (in this case, historical interviews I have done) from Audio tape into my computer (Wav or MP3). I've tried using a simple audio cable from my tape player (I don't have any more money to spend, so I just connect to the head phone jack outlet) to the Line In on my sound card. This sounds fine through my PC speakers so the sounds appears to be getting in.

But the recording isn't working (using the MS recorder that comes with windows).

What do I need to do differently?

Thanks!

Does your tape deck have RCA connectors on the back? If so you need a cable that goes from two RCA's (left right) to a stereo 1/8" male plug that you would plug into the Line in on your soundcard.

Microsoft sound recorder is not so good.

Check out:

www.goldwave.com

Demo available, think it's time limited.

Also, double click the speaker icon down in the bottom right corner of your screen, beside the time. Make sure line in is not muted. Go to Options/Properties/Recording if you do not have a line in listed.

Definitely follow all of the instructions Emeric_2 has suggested to you.

You could also download a demo version of soundForge from http://www.sonicfoundry.com

That should be enable you to save your historical interviews as WAV.s or MP3's.

Post us back to let us know your progress.
