Is there any program out there that actully make damn good audio conversions? I have a ton of mp3s that I would really like to start burning to disks but I want to convert them to wavs. first. Is it not even worth it do to lack of quallity that they bring back or will a conversion program really help...?

--- By the way, How efficent are these things? I have seen a few pro-hardware converters that do a good job but never software based converters.

Most consumer CD burning programs will convert MP3 to PCM for CD burning. No, it won't rebuild all the quality that was lost when it was turned to MP3 in the first place.

John is correct, MP3 is a LOSSY compression scheme. No amount of hardware, or crazy algorithm will ever be able to get back the data that was tossed away.

Actually, I believe an MP3 decoder (such as used when playing an mp3 through Winamp or WMP) is actually converting the audio to a PCM data stream, which then gets sent to the D/A converters, since I'm pretty sure that at that low of a level, the DA conversion can only decode a PCM stream. Of course, this PCM stream is not nearly the same as the original WAV before it got converted to the mp3.

(I think I drank too much coffee tonight)

Hi,
Both CDEx and Exact Audio Copy will re-encode MP3's as .WAV's if that's what you're looking for.

For some reason, all the links to CDEx were down just now when I try them. 1.51 is the most recent version, so try to get that one.

There are FAQ's on some sites that explain how to set-up these programs - the learning curve is quite steep (from no knowledge to well-informed took me about 3 weeks of reading), but very useful - I set my Dad up with CDEx in 10 minutes, and explained what he needed to know in that time.

It's well worth reading the stuff at
http://mp3.radified.com/
even though it may seem a bit overwhelming at first.

Also, there's an MP3 part of this site (www.homerecording) isn't there? I'm sure people will be able to help you there.

Good luck,

GVDV.

Typo there gordone, should read lossy compression.

For lossless compression you need to use something like the Monkeys Audio codec

Doh!!! As soon as I went to bed I thought I might have gotten that wrong!
LOSSY LOSSY LOSSY!!!!!!!!

Now I need to get some coffee!

Happy New Year everyone!
