When using cards like the C-Port, Echo, Aardvark, etc... are you locked into using only the plug-ins from your software? If you have some outboard effects unit is it advisable to use those with these tyes of units or do I still need to go through a mixer. I noticed I don't see any sends/rtns on these units.

I have the c-port with the 8x8 breakout box.Using outboard effects is as simple as patching the effect between the individual channel output and another channel (armed to record) input.
Or I can send the individual channel outputs to my 8 channel mixer and use the inserts on the mixer. But the first way is easier, just two cords.

The Delta Omni Studio is even more versatile. It has inserts and aux returns too. Not sure if the C-Port thas them too.

The inserts and aux rtns is nice, and is point of consideration. I do like the fact that the C-port is rackmountable. Question for TOM: Does that introduce a lot of noise when you go to a mixer, and how do you control the wet/dry mix?

I use the mixer just for the transformer to get the 60 dB boost coming in as XLR.The faders are down and the insert jack is PFL.The cord is less than a foot long.I'm sure is does add some noise (but how much?).I haven't done any critical listening tests to find out because it hasn't been noticeable to me.
In terms of wet -dry,that depends on the effect I want to use and is controlled at the outboard gear.

Thanks for the info, I am seriously considering the C-Port. It has gotta be better than my Behringer mixer. I don't do too much recording that I need my outboard gear these days, I just wanted to keep my options open.
