hello all,
i am wondering why the free to use recording software audacity all of a sudden will stop operating and need to close whilst you're in the middle of a project. my old house mate introduced me to it and it worked fine for the 18 months we lived together, but since i have been trying to use it i have nothing but trouble, with this issue being the problem. i've tried different computers, different versions etc. all to no avail. i know there are other programmes out there but audacity is just so easy and fun to use and it seems a shame.

anyone had this problem with this programme?

i should also add that the specs of my laptop and every other computer i've tried with are not shit.

I don't know of any reason why it would do that, not that I'm a particular expert with Audacity. What OS? Did you recently install a service pack (assuming Windows)? Did you acquire or start using any new plugins? Did your project get suddenly bigger, and maybe is now too large for Audacity to handle? (Though I'm not aware of any particular size limitations.)

Since it's open source, if you're so inclined you can download and build the source code, and use standard debugging techniques to figure out what's wrong. It's not necessarily easy, but at least it's possible, which is not the case with proprietary software.

You might try looking at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/.

That's just how audacity is, I think. It's not 100% reliable. That's part of why I only use it as my secondary software nowadays. (After Reaper)

Make sure to make plenty of backups. Audacity has deleted entire projects on me more than once.

thanks to all who replied, it seems an older version is working fine at the moment. so i'll just see how i go. otherwise, this reaper programme seems to get alot of props in here, maybe i'll give it a go. cheers!
