hello
does anyone know of places on the web that i can buy an rackmount 4U ATX backplate?
any help on web sites that sell rackmount case parts would be great..
thanks!!

The case didn't come with one? Odd.

I'll have a look around tommorow and see if I can find one that might work.

Email me the details - eloan@magma.ca

You're gonna have to do some seriouse case modding (watch you fingers) to fit an ATX motherboard in there. It's definately not designed for it. But you've probably already guessed that..

Backplates aren't really necessary though. In general a backplate doesn't give any mechanical support to the connections on the back. It's just there to look good but when it's fitted in a rack, you won't see a thing of it.

Oh, that wasn't what I had in mind at all....

christiaan is right, you will need to do some serious modifications to fit an ATX board in that case.

I start to wonder if I'm thinking about the same thing as spacedye is myself.

Spacedye. With backplate, you mean the complete backside of the case? Or just the small plate that usually sits around the connections of the onboard peripherals on ATX motherboards? (That's what I was thinking about)

I was thinking of this - view file attachment

If your handy with torches and spot welding it could be done.

forgot the pic.

what is that peice called anyway? is the correct name backplate?
of course, it would be alot bigger in size and all....
oh, and the man who sold me the case says it will hold a 13" x 13" motherboard. my P4T-E is 12" x 9". hopefully ill get lucky.

anyway, back to my point, does anyone know where i can purchase such a thing?

yup, that's what I thought it was about initially.

Spacedye, you've thought about the PSU as well? I don't know what kind of motherboard used to be in the case but there's a fair chance that the PSU that comes with the case won't fit on the P4T-E.

Can't help you with an address for those big backplates by the way. I live in The Netherlands...

whats a PSU?
is that a power supply? cant i just swap the one i have in my desktop now?

yup, the power supply. sorry about that.

If the PSU of your desktop PC fits in the case and it works with your P4T-E than you can swap it. I don't expect a problem with that though.
The rackmount case seems pretty straightforward in that matter.

thanks,
i think ive found the part i need online @ rackmountpro.com. the only thing is, they only have an email contact, no phone #.:(
so im gonna have to wait.
im only switching all of the stuff from my desktop into the rackmount because i want to make my recording computer mobile so i can bring the studio to the bands. ill see how that works out and if i can make a few bucks recording some bands.
doesnt sound like a bad idea, does it?

sounds pretty cool.
How much did you pay for the case by the way?
Just curious because new 19'' cases cost a fortune compared to (mini/midi/big)-towers.

$41.00

i plan on mounting this case inside a case with wheels with my effects and working it like that. but we'll see what happens. ive been calling comanies to locate this backplate, but they basically are scratching their heads or saying "well, if you didnt buy the case from us, then we cant help you"
i'll find this backplate, or modify it like you said with a torch and spotwelding...LOL!!!
:D

Hey you just may need to! :)

Looking at that picture, is the whole backpart riveted on, or does it attache with screws? If you find this piece, how will you adapt it to this server case design?

If your going to mount it inside another case I'd just cut out the parts where the // port, serial port etc need to poke through.

Or, buy a case that is designed for a standard ATX form factor...

In any case, I'm sure you can get it to work - but have my doubts about the backplate idea (unless it's not all riveted/spotwelded together).

well, i havent gotten the case yet. trying to get the parts at the same time. if it doesnt work out, im gonna freak, but its only $41.00. no biggie. the crap part is that i bought a case that is 22" deep, ready to go... but cant find a case that will carry all of my recording gear that doesnt cost hudreds and hundreds of $$$.
so, i figured id take a $41 chance and see what happens. ill keep you informed..... should make for an interesting event...

Looking at that other pic of yours I see what you mean. It's a seperate panal that attaches (somehow) to the back of the chassis. Probably need to get the exact one from the manufacture of the case.

Good luck though!

:D
