A company (who by the way I am not affiliated with) called ATS Acoustics has been selling bass traps for a while now, at prices much affordable than GIK and Realtraps. Most were hesistant to buy from them, however, as they did not have NRC ratings for their panels, only the materials used in their panels. But, finally, they now have NRC ratings on their independant panels by RAL, an acoustical testing laboratory.

These are their prices on each panel:
24x48x4 Panel - $43.95

24x48x2 Panel - $32.95

24x24x4 Panel - $22.95

24x24x2 Panel - $16.95

It seems to me that they are just OC 703 or mineral wool wrapped in fabric, selling for $40. Well I could make one of those for $2. Sounds like a rip to me.

No you could not - $2 ??????????? You couldn't buy the fabric for 2 bucks -

Now - add to that the cost of the 703 or mineral wool - a frame and putting it all together.

Plus preparing it for shipping and the shipping costs - and I think you have a very VERY reasonable price for the product.

You cannot compare this product to the GIK product - any more than you can compare GIK to RealTraps.

This is an apples to oranges to bannana comparison.

For example - RealTraps are a specially designed treatment with a patent on the entire system utilizing some sort of a membrane.

GIK traps are a particular manufacturer's acoustic material in an extra deep custom frame with a flame retardant fabric wrap - that automatically create an air space between the back of the rigid panel and the wall - and ATS are what you describe above.

Everything depends on exactly what one is looking for.

ATS's products are not "a rip" - they work - as do GIK's and Ethan's. They are just different and less expensive.

diffusion get your lazy butt on the phone and find some mineral wool. wrap it up and throw in in the corner. done. it's not complicated.

The website states that their panels are not true bass traps and aren't particularly effective below 100khz. I spoke to the owner over at ATS, and he offered to cut the back panel away from the panels so that they would be more effecive as corner traps -free of charge. Currently they have a very thin plywood backing. He'd cut them away to leave just a ply frame. This seems like a pretty good solution for those not interested in building a whole mess of traps. Shipping is a bitch, though.

If you look at the numbers posted, you'll see that they're not terribly effective as bass absorbers - which is presumably what they're for at 4" thick. A .65 rating at 125hz is not all that great.

This doesn't even account for the fact that those have a hard back on them - a definite no-no for a bass absorber that should be mounted straddling a corner to take advantage of the air-space.

Yes - they're reasonably priced. But, every time I look at that site, I see things that make me wonder if the guys building them really understand room acoustics or are just selling fabric covered fiberglass and wouldn't have any idea on how to assist a customer in selecting the appropriate matieral combinations, where to mount them, how many are needed, etc.
