hey anyone happen to know which one is better? they are both $80...please give me the highs and lows on both mics. thanks

Audio-Technica Pro 25

Low: 30hz
High: 12khz

Shure SM57

Low: 40hz
High: 15khz

The Pro 25 has a big dip centred on 5khz and starts rolling off at around 7.

And this is what the SM57's FRC looks like

So there you go ;)

If I owned both mics, I'd try both every time I was about to record a floor tom...

Yeah, what Mark7 said. I've been using the pro 25 for a few months on the floor andf I'm happy with the results.

it kinda depends on the sound you are after, but id guess that 4 out of 5 times the pro25 will sound better.......

The SM57 is a really great mic with tons of applications and I suppose it could work on a 14" floor tom, but when you start getting into the 16" and 18" floor toms, you're asking a little too much from this trooper. It probably will work okay, but a kick mic will really do a better job on the lower end.
Have you tried a large diaphram condenser on the floor toms? You don't have to worry about the attack from the toms the way you would from a kick drum. An SP B1 or an Oktava MK219 will be real sweet on the toms and they're in the same price range.

Hummm, it looks to me like the above chart is showing the Pro 25 as being pretty "flat" at 5kHz.

Since when has DJL been mental?

It's flat at 500, but at 5000 its got a huge dip.

Actually he's right. What I should have said is that there appears to be a peak which starts at 1k, rises to about 6dBs max at 3K and then starts falling until it's level (is that 0?) again at around 5K. And then there's another 6dB (I'm guessing) peak at 7K. Interesting. What's it been tailored to?

Neil Ogilvie......... thanks for the the good lol.

Yeah Mark, that's 0.... and I don't know what it's been tailored to, sorry.

For what it may be worth, I recently bought an ATM25 (the Big Boys version of the Pro25) for use as a Kick/Floor Tom/Bass Cab (and maybe even Guitar Cab and Vocal) mic. I got it for about #90 (including surcharges. Grr  ) off of ebay. The FRC for that looks like this

If you got the ATM25 for 90.00 pounds UK including the surcharges, you did very well. Most places here in the States sell it for $169.00 (#105-#110) and you can find it on sale at places like 8th Street for $139.00 (#90+). Shipping and surcharges then added on.

I don't care what any chart says about that mic, I use my ears and it is my favorite kick drum mic of the top 4 in the under $200 (#130) range although they are all good(AKG D112, Audix D6, Beta 52). It also works real well on floor toms and as a throat mic for djembe

I got one of my mint ATM25's from ebay not too long ago also... I think I paid something like $70 US. Hey, what does the ATM Pro sound like as compared to the ATM25? Thanks.

thanks everyone, although this was never one of my options, but i'm actually thinking about getting the studio projects b1 to use it for the floor tom as well as for vocals, being that i don't have a vocal mic. i jus have oktava mk012's...is this a good idea?

Why?

becuase i also need a vocal mic...then therefore, if i get the b1, then i can use it for the floor tom and for vocals....someone request the b1 before. is it a bad idea im guessing?

i don't know if the b1 is a bad idea or not.....but condensers can sound really awesome on toms.........it's worth a try......

also the atm25 is badass on toms and b-drum.......and it's cool if you want a real chunky guitar sound........i think someone suggested looking for one on ebay.......that may be what you want to do......i think they said they found theirs for like 70 bucks or something.....that would definitely be worth the time looking on ebay.
