I just purchased a athlon 64 ... I know cakewalk has a 64 bit version of sonor 5.0 ! anyone familiar with the 64 bit architecture ? im afraid since its new I may have compatibility issues/ bugs ?? Ill have to upgrade to windows xp pro x64 . .as well as find 64 bit audio / video drivers ?? But it promises to be killer for these type of apps ??

It IS killer for recording, I have actually noticed an audible difference in the quality of the sound in 64bit. The only thing you have to worry about is making sure that EVERYTHING in the computer has 64bit drivers/upgrades.
Video card
Audio card
Plug-in's
Mastering software
EVERYTHING you use!!!!
I built an x64 X-2 4800+ AMD dual core monster over a year ago planning on using it in 64bit. The problem is that MOTU just last month actually came out with 64bit drivers for my 24i/o. So I had to use this $5,000 monster in 32bit for the last year and just now got to upgrade it to the 64bit. Many nights spent cussing out MOTU for being so slow lol. You HAVE to make sure that everything you plan on using is supporting 64bit, alot of companies still do not have 64bit drivers yet. I think it is insane that all these companies got caught with their pants down on the 64bit thing. It was obvious 2 years ago that 64bit was the new thing, they pretty much planned on stopping building 32bit machines when it came out. Most 32bit machines that are avaiable right now are backstock from a year ago. 64bit is MUCH better, and people will laugh at anyone with a 32bit machine in 5 years lol. Hope this helps, just like I said make sure ALL of your bases are covered before you install the new stuff. (don't worry even if you upgrade and something fails you can always uninstall it and put 32bit back on the machine)

I would not worry too much about it for now. It's still in it's infancy as a consumer product and very few vendors support it. Wait another year or so for Vista to develop and see where the whole 64 bit thing goes.

who is "they"? the only company that sells consumer level 64bit chips is AMD. Apple gave up on the G5 and went back to 32 bit, and all the new core stuff from intel is 32 bit also so i think 64bit right now is more of a novelty and if you have a production machine, you would be better served leaving it 32bit until vista arrives and everyone will switch over (~1-2 years)

from what ive read most 32 bit progs still work on XP-64 .....and Delta has 64 bit drivers for my audio card ?? sonor X-64 claims to stilll let you use 32 bit plug ins ??? but i will prob wait a while and see how things progress with 64 bit ... but even in 32 bit the athlon 64 SMOKES ..

Your best bet is to stick with 32-bit software for now, at least until the 64-bit becomes more widespread. 32-bit actually performs better that the 32 bit

Um,..Like I said, MAKE SURE everything you use has 64bit drivers before you install the 64bit program. As for those that say 64bit is a "novelty" and not actually being used yet? I hate to tell them but many people in my area are using 64bit machines and have noticed a definate difference in sound quality in their recordings. I am using a 64bit machine in a rather large studio I work at and we have had no problems (now that MOTU caught up) Vista will be the final nail in the coffin for 32bit, but it will not be "years" before it is released. I have seen vista in action, the program is done, and just waiting for a lull in the sales of XP before microsoft releases it I am sure. Why release the new version when the old version is still selling like hot cakes? Vista has been reviewed bye several computer geek magazines in the past year and a half, it will not be years, it will be months until it's release. MAC has not turned it's back on the G5 the only reason it is releasing 32bit machines right now is because of their recent deal with Intel to start making chipsets for them. MAC is trying to break into the more cost effective computers, which 32bit has become alot cheaper since the introduction of 64bit because everyone knows that 32bit is a dying technology. MAC can now finally get some people into their computers that never could afford to before. I am willing to bet large amounts of money that the G6 (or whatever they call the next MAC) will in fact be 64bit as well and be dual processor. Upgrade whenever you are confident that everything you will need to use will be supported (which should be everything bye now) Vista will be an easy upgrade from XP64 as XP64 and vista are pretty much the same program, vista just has alot of advancments in the visuals and security. Most of all have fun!

absolute rubbish. Where they using the special floating 64bit file type?
