AT4051a opinions

Opinions on AT4051a requested....

friend wants to sell me one for $200,
sure looks sleek.

In my cabinet I only have an AT4040, 2 Oktava MK012,
and a SM-57...

maybe the beginning of a percussive set?
(he says not for the kick drum)...

Yes, the 4051 is a wonderful mic. I don't know what they go for used, but $200 doesn't sound unreasonable. No, it would not probably be used for a kick drum. But it is excellent on any string instrument, or as a drum overhead, or anywhere else that a good small diaphragm condenser might be used.

The only downside is that you already own a pair of MC012s, which would tend to be used for the same purposes. The 4051 is a better mic than the Octava, but you should only get it if you have a real need for three mics in the general SDC category.

Actually I have just one Oktava, and was considering sending it in to Oktavausa and having Ken find a matched one for another $200.....
Suppose I could sell the one I have and see if I can find another Audio
Technica, which probably would match well without having to be 'matched'
as the quality control would seem to be quite a notch above Oktava....

$200 is a very good price for a used 4051a. They typically go for $250-300 on e-bay. I have a couple and I'd take them over the Oktava given the choice. I'd buy it. If you later decide you don't want it, you can unload it for at least what you paid for it if not more.

awesome mic- awesome price. a little prone to overload or perhaps body resonance...never could figure out what the distortion on my cymbals were when using that mic.

they'd be toppier and clearer than the 012's. kind of a bite-y top end but less so than other AT mics. sort of like a 451 but much clearer.

if you don't want it - let me know. i had a pair and sold mine and kinda wish i didn't.
