Getting better
First impression from a low-ender on a truly nice Audio Technica 4047S/V....

I finally got it last night and was only able to do some vocal testing (on my own weak voice unfortunately). The mic itself exudes quality, first off, with decent heft and a beautiful nonglare silver finish.

I Didn't like the shockmount much because it appears what actually holds the mic is a rubber band which is hard to slip on. Once on, however, it seems to work fine.

What I heard in a recorded vocal track, in a word, was balance. Nice warm low-mids, perfect clarity but no sibilance problems. Plenty of body. Smoother than the V67 I recently sold. I like it!

At this point my other primary vocal mic choice is a Marshall V77. By comparison the 77 has slightly more clarity and presence. Sure, this could be harsh on some voices. I think I like it equally well on my voice - if the song calls for more "cut-thru" than "body."

(I also have an EV RE-16 when I want ultra-smooth, but I haven't compared it to either the 4047 or the V77).

From someone accustomed to Marshalls and SPs, the 4047 seems to be a step up. But I will also say I still like SP and Marshall for the money, and I imagine I'll continue using the V77 on a fair number of tracks.

For what it's worth,

Fab

thanks for the mini-review, Fab. I had an AT4047 a while ago and agree with what you say. It sure is a good vocal mic for many voices, even though it might not be able to "cut through" like others. But it has a nice "silkyness" that I quite liked.

Did you sell yours, Giganova? If so, why? Just curious.

yup, I sold it. Dunno why, actually, coz I liked the 4047 and now wish I'd still have it. I was trying out a lot of different mics over the past year or so, and finally settled with an Gefell M930, which sounds amazing.

You know, its like: you get a mic, you like it, but after a while you think "hmmm, if that mic already sounds good, how do better mics sound like??", and you go & get something better and more expensive. Now, as I said: the Gefell sounds really good, so I keep wondering how really good mics sound like and started saving some money already to step up again. But again: of all the mics I ever had, I regret selling the AT4047 and the Sennheiser 441 most. :D

I tried out the AT4047 last weekend. Dudley brought his over to show me.

It seemed to be a really smooth mic. I didnt feel it was a very warm microphone but it wasnt harsh at all. If people are interested i could post up a sample of what we did with it on vocals. It was just a test session but i will mix it. I will probably need to get permission from the performer though but im sure he will be fine with it.

If you are interested let me know. We used an Old School Audio Type C preamp (API style) so it might end up having a little more body to it because of the type of preamp but it should give you a general idea. I could possibly try and test it with the A style (clean style) preamp if you want to get a better idea on how it sounds alone.

Let me know.

Danny
