Getting better
First impression from a low-ender on a truly nice Audio Technica 4047S/V....
I finally got it last night and was only able to do some vocal testing (on my own weak voice unfortunately). The mic itself exudes quality, first off, with decent heft and a beautiful nonglare silver finish.
I Didn't like the shockmount much because it appears what actually holds the mic is a rubber band which is hard to slip on. Once on, however, it seems to work fine.
What I heard in a recorded vocal track, in a word, was balance. Nice warm low-mids, perfect clarity but no sibilance problems. Plenty of body. Smoother than the V67 I recently sold. I like it!
At this point my other primary vocal mic choice is a Marshall V77. By comparison the 77 has slightly more clarity and presence. Sure, this could be harsh on some voices. I think I like it equally well on my voice - if the song calls for more "cut-thru" than "body."
(I also have an EV RE-16 when I want ultra-smooth, but I haven't compared it to either the 4047 or the V77).
From someone accustomed to Marshalls and SPs, the 4047 seems to be a step up. But I will also say I still like SP and Marshall for the money, and I imagine I'll continue using the V77 on a fair number of tracks.
For what it's worth,
Fab
