SORRY!!
This might be the biggest dumbest question.... but is there a BIG difference between the two? If so, what is it?
Yet again sorry for the nubbish question. ^^

To me, the 4040 sounds fuller and bigger than the 3035. I much prefer it for vocals.

is it worth buying for $350 ish? It's mainly going to be used for hiphop vocals and in that area

I bought mine used for less -- for $350 you can also get a Shure SM7b new, and that may be preferred, depending on the voice. The 4040 would be less dependent on having a decent preamp than the SM7b. There are other choices, too - if you get a chance to read through a bunch of threads here, it'll be worth it.

Do you have a chance to try them out? Bottom line is that it's a tough question to answer in the abstract. I don't know anyone who dislikes their 4040, of course - they're well built and always good for something.

If those are your only choices, the 4040 is a better mic. That's why it's a 4000 series. The 2020 is not as good as the 3035 , if they had a 1010 I don't think I would want to hear it.....

Is the difference significant though?

Every improvement in your signal chain is significant to some extent. Mics are probably the most apparent to a rookie (was for me).
I think you will keep and use a 4040 long after you have sold the 3035 (though I know some of you guys use them regularly).
I had a 3035 until I bought a 4040, I then sold the 3035.
It is noticably better, I don't know about significantly better.

the biggest difference is that the 4040 does not suck, and the 3035 does. To explain a little better, the ammount of suckage in the 3035 is SOOO great, well...I just cant even explain it. The 4040 however, does contain its own ammount of suckage, when compaired to the 3035, is very little. Like if you were to look at a bar graph which graphed the suckage of each mic. Lets say this bar graph measured between 1 and 100. The 3035 would probably register around 300 or so, and the 4040 would be down around 15 to 20. I know what you are thinking....15 to 20 is a fair amount of suckage, BUT, when looking at this graph, the suckage of the 4040 is miniscule in compairison to the 3035.

hope this helps...

oh yea...Id like to ad that I purchased my at4040 from someone here on this board for $175 and only recently sold it for $200 locally... :)

not becuase it was a bad mic...but I had upgraded past it...

basically the 40 series is the one no matter which model you get. i have a pair of 4050s and i love them.

Man, that his GOT to be the most subjective, and least usable, "advise" I have every heard. I know I was not the asker, but really, there is nothing there of any real use.

I have no experience with the 30 series AT mics, but I do own two 40's. I like them both, and would recommend them.

If price difference is the issue, you may want to look at the Shure KSM27. Musicians Friend and other retailers are selling them for $200. It should yield better results than the at3035 for rap vocals and should be in the same vein with the AT404. Maybe someone else can give more details on the KSM27.

looks like you missed the real point of my rant.....

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I like the 3035.

I have compared it side by side with a 4033 on acoustic guitar, and yes the 4033 was a hair better. But with EQ the 3035 could be made to sound very much like the 4033.

The 3035 is also very nice on some vocals.

This is the most technically sound advice I have heard in a while.

Diet coke came squirting out of my nose.

:D :D :D
