How sturdy is this shockmount? It's the first I owned that doesn't per se "lock" the mic in. Would it be reliable enough to suspend the mic from the shockmount? I'm just kind of nervous with the rubber band type support. Does anyone successfully use this method with this paticular model of mount?

wow, that mount is pretty cool with the attached pop filter... something to look into when I get a few extra bucks. Thanks for the link Kahuna.

On the contrary my friend, the mic DOES in fact "lock in" to the shockmount. The is a definite "lip" or "groove" where the thick rubber band suspension fits around the mic. Once you get the band between the groove your mic isn't going anywhere. It's locked in proper!
I have my AT4040 suspended upside down. Check out the little booklet thingy that came in the box!

AT used to make a shock mount for the 40 series (but I think it works with the 30's as well) that has a locking "nut" on the bottom of the shock mount that has 3 rubber pads that grip the mic and hold it in place. I have two of them and they are very very sturdy. I looked on the AT site and couldn't find it anywhere, same with a google search and ebay. I'll see if I can find a part number on the mount when I get home tonight.

The ones that come with the mics are great and they get the job done well, they are just a pain in the ass to get the mic in and out of the mount. These other mounts, all you had to do is give the bottom a quarter twist and your mic was free.

Angusdevil, if you can find the model # that'd be great! I'm going to dig around online as well to see what else I can come up with. I am leaning towards the one Kahuna posted (with that being pretty much my only option...lol). But if you can't, I'll give AT a call and see if they still make them.

Ok, I took a look at the shockmount and it actually isn't made by AT, it's an AKG and the model number is H-100. It's made for 414's but it works on most (if not all) of the AT 20, 30 and 40 series. According to the AKG site, it lists at $133.40

I couldn't find any that have been on ebay recently but I have seen them up every once and a while and they go for around $75.

Hope this helps ya out.
