Hi I'm new here jus signed up to ask this. On dolphinmusic.co.uk the at4040 and at4033 are both £170 (like $344). It says on the at4040 its a saving of £60 ($123) and the at4033 is a saving of £160 (about $330). But the thing is I've read a couple things on here saying the 4040's better. But surely for the price isn't the 4033 better? please help. Plus the technical bullsh*t dont make sense to me all I know is I want a good condenser mic for recording rappers and instruments.

non technical opinion

I own both the 4040 and 4033. They sound different but both sound good. The 4040 is "honest". It doesn't "color" the sound. The 4033 is a little more colored but not like a MXL V67 or an Octava 319.
This might sound technical but it might be important to know. The 4040 is a large diaphram condensor but the 4033 isn't. If that matters.
IMHO...save some money and get the 4040. It will be fine for your purpose. After I bought the 4040, it kept nagging at me whether it was better than the 4033 so I bought a 4033 too. I kept them both. Good luck!

The 4033 is a brighter mic and the 4040 is somewhat darker. If it were me, I would opt for the 4033, which I find is a better all around vocal mic that doesn't require as much eq on the top end for vocal defination. I have both mics.

I own an at4040 and am very happy with it. Never tried the 4033 though need to put that on the to do list.

You can go to audio technica,s web site and listen to all of the 4000 series microphones and make your own desicion on which one sounds the best for you.

I sure never considered the 4040 to be dark.
Once again we have two opposing opinions in the mic forum. Imagine that! Rock on!

And for another differing opinion... I do not have mch experience with the 4040, but I have alot of experience with the 4033. Personally, I try and avoid them whenever possible. They always have a harsh and very unpleasing top end to them, and lack definition in the lows. I am not saying that the 4040 is the mic to go with, just that I personally would consider most any other option than the 4033.

i have a 4033 and like it quite a bit, but it is pretty damn bright...great on some stuff, terrible on others

I have used both fairly extensively i would suggest the 4040.

I find the highs on the 4033 to be a bit harsh, a bit too forwards.

I've used the 4040 as OHs, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, and kick. It didn't work perfectly on all of them but it is a fairly versatile mic.

just the other way around for me,
own both, but find the 4033 to be way more useful.

I'd say to rent a pair of both for a day, mic up a drum kit and have someone sing, and see which you like better. I found both models on consignment at a local shoppe and I liked the 4040 better.

IMHO though...CAD M177/M179s sound better. I like those better than Neuman U89s/U87s on vocals.
