At what volume level do you sing at? I sing at my talking level. Just want to know how most of you guys do it and want some ideas since I'm still on the newbie side of singing! haha

At whatever level is comfortable for you, without straining. This level can be increased with better technique. Practice, practice, practice. :)

You sing at talking level? I almost never sing at talking level unless I'm singing a mellow song.

How loud do you talk? lol :laughings:

It really depends on what the song calls for. Your voice is an instrument, different volumes give different tones.

Hahaha.. I talk normal. Not loud or quiet. I always thought my singing was too quiet. Haha.. I'l notch it up a few levels ;) haha

How many time do you see someone after singing on a band stand then talk (right up and on the same mic), and all you hear is 'mum nibmm belurrftt...' WTF was that?
:D
A clasic example of simply not stepping it up to talking somewhere like where one would sing.

Yeah thats true. So above talking level then? haha!

I sing louder than talking voice - it gets louder as I get more warmed up. It like a controlled yell....

Singers should attempt to track at about -12 on the way in? This gives you "room" to do things with your compressors, de-essers, choruses, delays, limiters, etc... It's warm enough where it doesn't have to be slammed with tools, but hot enough to not need much depending of what you're trying to do ultimately... -12, that's where you want to target, hotter? Move the mic, try not to blast it, and or use some compression on the way in. Colder? Grab the twig and berries? Use your diaphragm (and not in the way your girlfriend does...) and turn up the pre-amp.

I like to sing loud. I am a rocker, and singing quietly is not rock.

Mmm yeah, but then there's that thing where when someone truly holds a power, in a given game, won't necessarily be the one needing to talk the loudest ?

singing quietly is not rock.
Man, that takes the days award for "Stereotype in the box !".
It does raise an interesting challenge though ~ given that rock goes back to the 1950s, what is "rock" ?

That is right situation...
That is right confusing.

This is an interesting question, more interesting than it initially appears.
I read recently that for years, ACDC's vocalist, Brian Johnson, sang pretty quietly in the studio, at not that much above whisper level. I thought to myself, "how in the world does he sound so maniacal and loud, then ? ".
The studio is a marvelous world of skullduggery, imagination, creativity, deception and technical wizardry. I think you can sing at all different volumes.
For me, it kind of depends on the song and also how I feel and the microphone/preamp that I'm using. I never have to sing as loud with the Rode as I do with the SM58. But it depends. Also on the notes. Notes that are harder to reach, I'll tend to put more oomph into. Also, sometimes, I'm alot further away from the mike with the preamp up a bit more so I don't have to go so loud. It really depends on the feel I'm trying to give the song.
I reckon you should experiment with singing at different volumes and see what you get.

That is great advice about tracking levels :-) Doesn't help with a question on singing volume though, not that there is a correct answer. I talk into a mic and peak @ -12 all day long, just depends on how the gain is adjusted.
