Wondering if I can get any view from any of you who have an AT 4060, likes? dislikes ? Your signal chain ? Do you have any Neumanns etc ? Comparative wise...

I was going to buy a new Large Diaphram Condensor Mic for Vocals and was looking at the Nuemann U87 and the Lawson L47 if I have my models correct.

A rep at Proaudiodesign.com recommended the AT4060 because the specs on it were as good and in fact better than both of the more expensive mics.

I love my AT4060 and I price Matched it for about $900 at Guitar Center.

A U87 is over $2K

Here's all the individual Specs.

Hope this helps.

I was pretty much coming from a most for your money point of view.

If you have all the money at your disposal and you are going for some legendary sound then I guess you just buy that special mic.

I run the 4060 through a Grace Design Model 101 Mic Preamp.

It ran equally well straight into my Mackie 32.8 Analog Mixer.

Only thing I ever needed for it was a Pop Filter.

Yea I saw the specs as well for the AT4060, you ever run anything else though your preamp? Sound differences ?

I pretty much made sure I bought a great Vocal Mic, Overhead Mics, Drum Mics, and suitable Guitar Mics. Im not at a point yet where I can start buying other mics to have a variety of flavors.

So unfortunately I can't compare the AT4060 to any other mics in its class.

Good Luck.

got ya, but do you ever stick it for recording guitar, acoustic, electric, or just use it as a vocal mic ? What mics do you have, im curious

I have used it as an ambient Mic for recording a guitar cab in my vocal booth.

Worked nicely for that. I have also recorded accoustic guitar. It picks up very well like an overhead would.

I haven't tryed it direct on a guitar cab yet.

I use the following mics:

AT4060 Vocals

Audix DP5 Drum Mic Kit
2 Audix D2's for Rack Toms
1 Audix D4 for Floor Toms
1 Audix D6 For Kick Drums or Large Floor Toms
1 Audix I5 for Snare (Also works great for guitar cabs, very punchy)

2 Nuemann KM184 (Matched Stereo Pair for Overheads) Phantom Powered

AKG D112 Kick Drum/Bass Guitar Cab Mic

1 Shure SM57 (Use for Guitar cabs or on Snare Top or Bottom)
1 Shure Beta57(Use for Guitar cabs or on Snare Top or Bottom)
3 Shure SM58 (Used to use these between Toms before I got the Audix mics)
1 Shure Beta58 (Sometimes used for Hand Held Vocals)

I run all mics into a 100' American Cable Company 24 Channel Snake to the Mackie 32.8 mixer, then Direct Out's to Nuendo/RME 96K 8 I/O Converter.

The AT4060 cable plugs into its rackmounted power supply, then into my Grace Model 101 Preamp, and finally to Nuendo/RME 96K 8 I/O Converter.

I would never judge a microphone by its spec sheet. Otherwise I might be led to think the Rode NT1-A is on par with the mics above and that the Coles 4038 was a stinker.

Comparing multi-pattern mics to a single pattern mic is like comparing a pickup truck to a sedan. There are reasons to choose a cardioid only and reasons to choose a multi-pattern, and there are reasons why multi-pattern mics cost more.

I have two AT4060's and they sound great, some of the best sounding mics I have. I had a Neumann M147 that I sold so that I could get another 4060. Other LDC mics I have are U87 and AKG414. But do replace the stock Sovtek 6922 tube with a JJ 6922. It sounds better than the NOS JAN versions available and almost as good as the Sylvania Gold Brand that is in my other mic. It opens the mic right up.

What do you use 2 for? Backup? Overheads?

Just curious.......
